Work continues on the infrastructure below Related’s San Pedro Apartments in Little Tokyo. Normally, that isn’t considered news.
However, a construction crane has now been erected at the site, even though the six-story project will be built using wood construction methods.
The two-level underground parking garage is beginning to take shape, and once complete the residential structure itself should begin rise rapidly.
The San Pedro Apartments project is part of the larger Block 8 in Downtown Los Angeles: Four parcels on the northern two-thirds of the block bounded by Second, Third, Los Angeles and San Pedro streets.
Two of the fully entitled parcels have been sold off to separate developers and are awaiting commencement of construction activities. The entire block was formerly a surface parking lot, and the completed development will include a pedestrian retail promenade and two-way street.
Original designs for the Block 8 project were handled by Thomas P. Cox Architects. It remains to be seen whether developers AvalonBay and K. Hovnanian will retain those designs.

Even though a crane is not needed…it’s a great visual for progress!
Does Related still own the parcel where the 21 story (is it still 21?) tower is to be built? If so, then is crane in a position to be used to build this tower? Just grasping at straws in hopes the construction continues on the tower as soon as the current building is complete.
As far as I’m aware, Related still owns the parcel you’re referring to - the northeastern corner of the block.
I don’t know if they’ll keep the crane in the six-story building while they build the condo tower since the six-story building will be ready for occupancy. I’m sure residents wouldn’t want a crane above them.
Though not common for a wood-framed building to have a crane, it’s not unheard of. The Orsini Phase II-B development has a crane, and it’s wood-framed.
They had a crane at the Hikari also.
