Meruelo Maddux's Union Lofts, Downtown Los AngelesShining elegantly on the corner of 8th and Hill, the Union Lofts building is the latest historic structure to incorporate a custom lighting scheme into its adaptive reuse.

We here at angelenic have taken a liking to this project lately, and it was only on a whim that we traveled down Hill Street instead of Olive this evening and happened upon the new lighting design, which has cropped up sometime in the past few days.

Facade lighting from below highlights terra cotta tiles and Beaux Arts detailing, spreading a warm glow onto the street. A ground-floor restaurant coming next year will ensure the sidewalk gets the royal treatment, and once residential leasing begins, lights in windows will add to the feeling of permanence.

Meruelo Maddux's Union Lofts, Downtown Los AngelesIt’s this type of commitment to the future of a building — and by extension, the larger community — that will help continue the trend toward a revitalized Downtown Los Angeles. In a neighborhood that needs more building-specific lighting plans, one dark building brought back to life makes all the difference in the world.

I’d like to thank Meruelo Maddux Properties for choosing to go with an undoubtedly more expensive lighting design that shows respect toward the neighborhood when it’s so very easy to simply toss up a few walls and sell the building.

Very nice. More buildings should do that.

I too am also very excited about this project. 8th street is very exciting! Grand Republic Lofts, The Chapman, Union Lofts, 8th & Grand, etc.. And with Colori Kitchen, Golden Golpher, the soon-to-be Vault lounge, high-end restaurant at Union Lofts, etc… 8th Street has heaps of potential!
