UPDATE: Mode is now closed until further notice. We’ll keep you posted.
For weeks, everyone has been asking about the opening of Mode - a new American diner disguised as a French Bistro - coming to 9th and Olive.
The interior is finished, and apparently the restaurant has hosted a couple late-night after-parties for recent Fashion Week events. The Downtown News had the opening date scoop last week when they reported the 4,800-square-foot new eatery would open its doors midnight on October 27th. After drinks at Blue Velvet in City West early that night, angelenic and company headed over to Mode to catch the opening event.
But once we arrived, there were no waitresses prancing around in shiny metallic jumpsuits serving croque monsieurs - only other confused and disappointed Downtowners passing by the lifeless storefront. Was it a case of the Downtown News getting the date wrong? Did Tony Jones decide to postpone his restaurant’s debut? Was it another case of city permit issues?
We decided to see what the scene was like this afternoon. After making a quick pass by and a phone call around lunchtime, we can confirm they’re still not open. We found a listing on opentable.com for Mode, which gives a phone number, hours of operation and a website that’s not online yet. The information could be outdated, but it shows a 2am closing time Sunday-Monday, whereas the Downtown News reports it will operate 24 hours. What’s the deal here?!
Update: Apparently it was city permitting issues! What a shocker. Eater LA has the grand opening now as Wednesday, Halloween night and all breakfast, lunch and dinner menus posted. Who needs the Downtown News anyway?
2nd Update: Thanks to reader PeterJ, we now know (as of November 1) Mode is still not officially open. The midnight to 8am soft opening hours were a little harsh for us on a Wednesday night, so we’re planning lunch there on Saturday instead. We’ll report everything we find out.
3rd Update: As of November 9 (thanks, Ginny!) it’s still not open. How about we’ll just let you know when it is open.
Final Update: Mode will be opening November 30.

Just spoke with a representative from Mode in the lobby of my building. Tonight, Halloween, is a soft-opening from midnight til 8am. They are still dealing with the city over their permits so they may not be open full time for a couple more days. Call ahead if you’re going later in the week.
Hi, could you please notify me know when the restaurant is really OPEN? Thanks.
Vicky :-)
Dailycandy.com has them listed in their weekend guide.
WTF the phone number just rings and rings and rings…
I’d really like to throw a b-day party there, but I’m getting the feeling it’s going to be demode before I get the chance. ugh!
It’s still not open. It’s such a tease.
Just called them, the owner answered, he said they just fixed the last problem preventing them from opening. He said they were going to open before Thanksgiving. =]
