Like fast food pasta, nostalgic burger joints and trendy fro-yo chains, Primo Hospitality Group believes one Downtown location just isn’t not enough to fully tap the local market.
The restaurant team, headed by Tony Rivera, is behind Primo Caffe coming to the Pegasus Apartments and Barker Block’s upcoming Primo Cucina.
Now, a third venture — to be known as Tony’s — will fill the 9,400 square-foot retail space across from NeihulĂ© inside the Pacific Mutual Life Building at 6th and Olive.
New details by way of Eater LA explain the planned restaurant will be much more elaborate than the early “Italian steakhouse” descriptor initially led on.
Tony’s will be a high-end supper club, comprising a bar/lounge area, several dining spaces and wrap-around outdoor seating overlooking Pershing Square. A wine room and showcase meat locker (cringe) confirm the original steakhouse report holds true, though pasta and seafood options should appeal to the veggie crowd.
All three restaurants are slated to open this year, though realistically we don’t expect Tony’s to come online until early 2009.

Has any of Tony’s ventures started build-out?
Caffe Primo at the Pegasus and Primo Cucina at Barker Block have started build-out. I don’t think Tony’s has started yet.
i live facing the soon-to-be Primo Cucino at Barker and can tell you that not a single move has been made in this building, not sure where you’re getting your info, Rich, but it’s incorrect.
Yeah, Barker is correct. Even Primo Caffe hasnt started building out, as of this afternoon. These restaurants were announced a while back, so I’m surprised that no progress has been made on either.
Well, then I stand corrected.
Are you sure about Caffe Primo, though? There’s two retail spaces under the Pegasus.
I walked by there today over lunch b/c I wrote the post and got a great look inside the entire ground level space - cavernous and gutted, nothing.
Surprised me too. I was sure they had started.
I heard that they’re still waiting on the permit to begin construction of Barker, but Pegasus will begin in the next few days. I was told that they expect a late September opening.
This is great news. 6th street has a great streetscape with a good mix of restaurants and retail going in - it seems more peacefull than 7th street - a street you really feel comfortable strolling down. The sidewalks are really quite wide on 6th, there are lots of large trees, and the pacific center is very well kept - the way they light up their trees is beautiful. 611 Place has a wide street scape and could accommodate sidewalk seating - The AON remodel will help the area as well. Neihule is one of the few high-end places to recently open downtown. I think 6th street is already turning into more of a retail/ “restaurant row” in a more organic way and rightly so as it is better suited for it than 7th St.
