angels knoll park addition shaping up

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

Angels Knoll Park AdditionThe new pocket park adjacent to the 4th Street portal of Metro’s Pershing Square station is slowly taking shape. Located on the northwest corner of 4th and Hill, the small park comes as an extension of Angels Knoll Interim Park, which slopes down Bunker Hill’s grassy east side.

Construction began this summer on what was long an empty dirt lot that accommodated mostly homeless people and scores of pigeons. Progress has been slow, considering work on the project started back in July.

Once the new green space is complete, it would be nice to see a mix of people making use of it, not just the homeless.

Plenty of lampposts and seating areas have been included. Another important feature I noticed being installed are sidewalk benches. City government finally realizes the need for more pedestrian seating along our Downtown streets.

This park project also marks an important shift in the way the city manages publicly owned land. Although various government entities hold title to underutilized parcels throughout Downtown, it’s rare to see that space maximized in a way that benefits the greater community.

This will be a nice addition to downtown. We need more pocket parks like this, not parks where we have to drive to like the Cornfields. That’s for the suburbians.

Cornfield park is walkable from Union Station and Chinatown Station, by the way. But yes, we do need more neighborhood-level parks closer to where all the action is.

They also seem to be building what looks like a staircase or - dare I hope? - an escalator? Anyway, *something* is being dug straight up the hill!

Christine,

That’s really interesting. I saw a mini trench being dug up the hill, but it looked like it was shallow, like it was for pipes or possibly hillside reinforcement. I could be wrong, though.

Ooohhh … why can’t we get an escalator? I mean, if they’re not going to reopen Angel’s Flight (and I’ve lost faith that they’re ever going to), we really need some kind of mechanized alternative to the stairs & the hillside. My feet are killin’ me! (Anyway, thanks for the updates, I check your page every morning now!)
