images for meruelo maddux tower reveal more detail

Until now, available illustrations for Meruelo Maddux’s 717 Ninth have been less than telling.

With only five more floors needed to meet its 35-story peak, those behind the still-unbranded project are ready to start directing some attention their way.

Mark Moreno of Mambo Architecture, the team behind the building’s design, has released several never-before-seen renderings detailing the rising glass structure.

A 7th-floor resident deck atop the parking podium will contain a swimming pool, hot tub, and wrap-around lounge area. An elevated “diving board” platform perched one story higher will provide an intimate observation point overlooking the South Park neighborhood.

Decorative cladding for the parking garage will exhibit an organic foliage theme, an appropriate fit with the glass “wall of water” planned to “pour” down the corner of 9th and Flower.

Adding to the drama is a slight blue to green gradient of the glass exterior, a design feature not yet evident from the street, but clearly visible in the new renderings below.

When completed next summer, 717 Ninth should have no problem making a name for itself.

lol this building has a sophistication of Park Ave, yet it has a “sooo LA” feel to it somehow. great pics!!

I’m still trying to grasp what the final concept for the first few floors will be. Is that glass? Plants? Neato, though.

Im curious to know if the windows open on this building

Neat concept though…. maybe I should start my own blog so I can get inside peeks into projects =) Thanks for sharing Steve

Yeah, I’m trying to figure out how the building will interact with the street. Is it going to be pedestrian friendly or more like a citadel?

whatever the case, it sure is perty to look at from my window every day. i hope the parking structure is covered by REAL foliage and not some screen-printed icky-ness.

and my fingers are still crossed that the seafood restaurant that has been talked about for the ground floor is a Red Lobster. that would really add an element of Park Ave like Raymond suggested :]

I hope it’s a Sizzler, just out of spite.

Red Lobster comment from Yelp.com…. “let me preface this with– i LOVE red Lobster. A lot. Enough to continue going to this place even after about 30 bad experiences. ”

The one in Times Square is always crowded. And since L.A. Live is being billed as “Times Square West”, maybe we should have one here too. After all, what other restaurant in downtown can offer you 30 bad dining experiences and still get you to return?

Colori Kitchen (consistent bad service)

pete’s -their tag line should be “consistently bad dining experiences”

Why not step it up an notch and lobby for a Bubba Gump Shrimp Company? The excellence of their fried food is head-and-shoulders above that of the fried food at Red Lobster. Let’s really make the South Park area truly special!

Isn’t a Trader Vics rumored for the spot?

14 Stephen Friday { 07.27.08 at 10:23 am }

B, no – that rumored started b/c of a photo of 717 Ninth on Trader Vic’s website. That turned out to be misleading and they quickly took it down.

Trader Vic’s is very close to signing a lease somewhere else in Downtown – I’ll write about that as soon as I get the green light.

Very interesting read and to see some projected final renderings. It’s been fun to watch the floors rise up week after week outside my front door.

When the hell is Howard Roark going to make a building in LA?

17 Seb { 07.28.08 at 8:24 am }

What about a Fridays, or lets bring a Hard Rock Cafe Los Angeles. What beter place then downtown.

18 Scott Mercer { 07.28.08 at 8:46 am }

If we get a Howard Roark building, I will blow it up myself for him, on his behalf.

Friday: I heard this project is supposed to have green/sustainable elements to it, do you know to what extent? Are they going anywhere near South Group standards?

20 LoftLA { 07.28.08 at 11:37 am }

They actually put the pool on the correct side to get sun. These are going to be apt though right?

21 TheLAstranger { 07.28.08 at 11:56 pm }

Scott Mercer, I didn’t think anyone was going to notice the Rand reference. Awesome. “Nothing can be reasonable or beautiful unless it’s made by one central idea, and the idea sets every detail.”

Wow stranger, an allusion to one of the most famous novels of all time. Ain’t u erudite!

So according the Downtown News Meruelo Maddux just got $84 Million to complete the project. Maybe they should take a little of that money and pay the contractor for the work done to the Union building, public records show they have several liens on the building for nonpayment.

24 anonymousWorker { 11.13.08 at 2:44 pm }

Oh yeah…. its beautiful right? And it really is…. but hey how about his, maybe AFTER they deal with all the liens against them, they will start to pay their employees a salary they actually deserve.

Too bad this building is now in foreclosure like evry other new property. LOL for these stupid greedy developers!
