spitz to open in little tokyo

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

Spitz in Little TokyoSpitz, “Home of the ‘Döner Kebab,’” will be opening this spring in Hikari on 2nd Street in Little Tokyo. This will be the restaurant’s second location, following their Eagle Rock debut at 2506 West Colorado Boulevard.

A number of testimonials in the storefront from “Internet food blogs” and a stamp of approval from Jonathan Gold seem to bode well for the establishment, which was voted 2007’s #1 Quick Food Spot in Los Angeles by Citysearch.com.

The restaurant’s claim to fame is the well-received Döner Kebab, a sandwich made of lamb, beef, chicken or falafel and topped with hummus, fresh veggies, tzatziki, chili sauce, served on toasted focaccia bread. Based on the window treatments plastered all over the storefront, they sure aren’t going to let you forget it.

Spitz’s other offerings include wrap versions of the Döner, coffee and Gelato Classico — rated “the absolute best ice cream in the universe without argument” by Time Magazine. OK, we believe you.

omg, that is such great news. i absolutely love spitz. eagle rock is always a little out of the way for me to get a quick döner fix, but now they are coming to downtown!?! that’s simply fantastic. i’m so there!

btw, döner kebab is like a turkish version of a gyros. it’s a great alternative to your usual fast food. keep ‘em coming.

I LOVE THE OINKSTER! I’d go there with my sister when we worked together in Pasadena. Memories.

The Militant has had döner kebab on the streets of Los Angeles’ sister city of Berlin years ago. Spitz’s version is great, but not exactly the same. But good to know his nearest Spitz will be just a subway ride away.

I think it’s interesting that a bunch of Oxy grads got this little eatery going. Great food, I need to go there again (haven’t been in a while). I’d like to see them sprouting up all over LA, it’s a nice alternative to falaffel, burgers, tacos, and sandwiches (well the subway type anyway). btw, the gelato comment is completely unncessary (from time magazine)

Doner kebab was our late night cheap drunk food of choice stumbling through Germany for World Cup. Awesome!
