krkd tower neon relit over broadway

KDRK Tower Neon LitThe Mercantile Arcade Building‘s iconic KRKD tower was relit (at least partially) last night after several years of darkness. Originally erected in 1932, the historic antenna received its neon adornment under the Museum of Neon Art‘s LUMENS Project in 2003.

Since that time, the 1924 structure at 5th and Broadway has been undergoing adaptive reuse into 142 apartment units. As the conversion nears completion after its lengthy four-year development period, we expect to see the electric tower become a permanent fixture in Downtown Los Angeles along Broadway.

However, the glowing tower is now only partially functional, and more work may need to be done to repair the possibly damaged neon tubes.

It is great that these old landmarks are lighting up once again. They have a distinctive look that could never be repeated. And with each one that is lit, it is like another beacon inviting people to come downtown after dark. right-on!

Soon enough, okay, not soon enough for me, those lights in the Jewelry Trades Building windows will be lighting up once people start living in there. I hope they finish up that project soon. I’m quite impatient.

Eastern Columbia is so lovely. One of the best buildings in LA.
