night of sexual performance madness at redwood bar
This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.
Don’t get too excited — it probably won’t be a scene out of your favorite Stanley Kubrick film — but the seemingly quiet, themed restaurant bar on the outskirts of Civic Center wants to show Downtown that it knows how to get down and dirty.
Legendary music producer and cinematic crusader Kim Fowley is bringing his self-branded Hollywood Sexual Underground, a ragtag mini music fest, to The Redwood Bar & Grill on the night of Saturday, August 16.
The event will feature “a love-in freak-a-thon of wall to wall music, performances and outlandish oddities” by a lineup of underground actors and musicians (including acts by Los Duggans, Debbie Danger and Reverend Lu$t Vegas), a sexy entourage and mystery “celebrities.”
Just imagine strippers, porn stars and costumed characters steaming up a room filled with skulls, crossbones and rope netting — the place might become some kind of… pirate, sex dungeon.
You’ve been warned.

Is ths the same spot ‘Mustache Mondays” moved too???
Mustache Mondays is located in the Globe Theater on Broadway, in the lower half of Club 740.
Great.
The creepiest man in Hollywood is now coming downtown.
At 102, you’d think he’d be tired of peddaling that same old crap.
Not dead yet, unfortunately.
I’m puzzled this post didn’t evoke a more passionate response from downtown’s puritan set. I recall last year quite a fuss when some unfortunate shop owner was run out of town when he had the termacity to sell porn.

I also recall the Downtown News editorializing on the dangers posed to downtown by some sad sack strip club near the 101 freeway. It was quite amusing reading the reporter’s dispatch from the club. I can imagine him itemizing the expense report. Yes, the children must be protected.
I recall recently how the local authorities denied a permit to an entrepreneur who sought to open a taxi-dancing club. Seems there was a sense this wasn’t the kind of business to be encouraged. Will they chime in here? I’m not holding my breath.
And we must not forget the young man who commented here recently. He was given to fainting at the sight of American Appareil advertising. The pornographic overtones were too much for him. A spirited debate ensued.
Yet, mysteriously, this post elicited hardly any comment. Possibly, it was overwhelmed by the posts about subway dreams. While this is plausible (public transit advocates are a most impassioned set), I have a hunch the silence was indicative of the mindset of the hipsters. Porn is good for me and my upscale social set. However, any such activity which caters to the lower social orders is to be discouraged, lest property values be impacted. It would be helpful if someone could sort out the contradictions here.
If a new business called “Hollywood Sexual Underground” tried to open a permanent location, not just a one-night-only event, in downtown, and there were little to no unhappiness about that, then you’d have a better reason to wonder about the contradictions.
That’s very considerate of the Redwood. Thanks.
