Downtown Los Angeles Blog

ringing in the new year downtown, dining options on the 1st (2007-2008)

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

Nokia Theatre @ LA Live, Downtown Los AngelesIf you’re planning on partying hard New Year’s Eve 2007 in Downtown, we’ve got a few suggestions for a variety of celebration styles! If you live in Downtown these events should all be within a $10 cab-fare range, but almost all of them have admission prices over $50.

So if a quiet night at home with some champange won’t cut it, consider some of these more lively occasions.

Also, we’ve put together a list of 17 Downtown restaurants with lunch and dinner hours on New Year’s Day, so you won’t have to cook while you’re nursing your hangover. Aren’t we thoughtful?

Giant Maximus

If you want to go to a “giant” party for your New Year’s celebration, Giant Maxmius is probably your ticket. The rocking circus-themed event features three music stages under big top arena tents, “high-flying acrobats, psychedelic circus antics, carnival games/rides and a giant ferris wheel!” Ugh, booze and ferris wheels do not mix well for me.

Giant Maxmius is held at 8th and Figueroa and tickets are $88.00 per person.

Together as One

Billed as America’s largest NYE dance music festival, the extravagant “attraction” is expected to lure in approximately 35,000 people from all over the world! Headliner DJs are Sasha & John Digweed, Ferry Corsten, Deadmau5, Junior Sanchez, DJ Reza, Cedric Gervais and Lee Coombs. Expect a choreographed fireworks show at midnight and lots of festivities.

Together as One is held at the Los Angeles Sports Arena and tickets start at $50 per person.

Hard NYE

In the other corner of Downtown, the Industrial District’s got a musical festival of its own lined up. Hard NYE will rock out with hot acts from the underground indie music scene and “performance acrobats art” all night long. Apparently, circus acts and musical acts go hand and hand these days. Expect Peaches to count down to midnight and Justice to follow her up.

Hard NYE will be located at 613 Imperial Street (Premiere Events Center) and tickets start at $75 per person.

Crash Mansion

Enjoy a “Chris Brown exclusive” evening complete with a red carpet, VIP rooms, hors doeuvres and lots of pretentious people. The night will also include other celebrity guest appearances and surprise performances. Tickets start at $75 per person.

1024 S. Grand Avenue
(213) 747-0999

Casey’s Irish Bar & Grille Party

Celebrate the New Year’s occasion with some live Irish music and draught ale! New York’s annual dropping of the ball countdown will be broadcast for the crowd. There will be no entry fee, and thankfully, no club promoters.

613 S. Grand Avenue
(213) 629-2353

George Lopez @ Nokia Theatre

America’s favorite Mexican is ending his six-day comedy show run at Nokia Theater on New Year’s Eve night. It’s probably the only event here worth the admission price - $55 per person.

great list….i think new years eve is going to be a good time to invite visitors to come downtown, cause i think it will have a good urban feel with a ton of people walking around the streets.
