south figueroa (formerly jardin) pushed back a year

South Figueroa project, formerly Jardin, by South Group, South Park, Downtown Los AngelesDowntowners following South Park developments were expecting to see groundbreaking on South Figueroa in the last quarter of 2007.

As December advanced and a new year approached, many wondered whether the two-tower, 648-unit condo development was delayed.

They were correct. A source from South Group, the developer behind the project (also of Evo, Luma and Elleven), tells us that groundbreaking has been pushed back to late 2008 or 2009.

South Group isn’t discouraged about Downtown’s real estate market. The developers remain optimistic on Downtown and are certain about a 2008 groundbreaking. Still, we will have to get used to that ugly parking lot being there for a while.

The project’s site — a surface lot bounded by 12th, Figueroa, Pico and Flower — is one of the most crucial parcel developments in the city’s plan to make South Park a 24-hour destination.

When did it stopped being called “Jardin”?

And were you supposed to pronounce it “garden” or “jarden” or was it some sort of spanish and it was to be pronounced “hardeen”?

Justin, it hasn’t been called Jardin for a while. I heard someone say that it was pronounced “zhar-deen.” Not that it matters anymore with the renaming.

Just to be clear, Jardin is French for garden.

Yea, now someone has to find out about the property north of Jardin, where LA Central is supposed to be built. Is that piece of land destined to remain nothing but a boring old parking lot (with, at best, a wood gate around it) well into 2008?

I also heard this might be scaled down to one building…and not nearly as tall as the renderings show.
