Ready to reel their third round of art installations, the folks at USC's School of Cinematic Arts are hosting an opening reception tonight in conjunction with Art Walk from 4:00pm to 11:00pm.
The rotating exhibition, called Chapman Windows, began in June and features animation and interactive digital media crafted by USC researchers, faculty and students, projected in three empty storefronts of The Chapman Flats on Broadway.
According to Scott Mahoy with The Labyrinth Project, one of the groups responsible for creating the displays, the large retail space on the north side of the building's lobby entrance will accommodate five unique installations.
Their showcase piece, called "Tracing the Decay of Fiction," is an interactive exploration of the late Hotel Ambassador where users can navigate through the rooms of the hotel, including the legendary Coconut Grove nightclub where Hollywood stars and movie moguls mingled with Downtown power brokers, and the Embassy room where Robert Kennedy was assassinated.
Other works include "J-106", a new visual-music composition by Mike Patterson, "Visango", an animated visual music installation that redefines how a viewer can be immersed in an orchestrated musical and visual performance by Renae Radford, "Experiments In Flat Stereoscopy", which investigates the display of two-dimensional images onto virtual screen surfaces at various depths by Perry Hoberman, and "Great Aunt Nell's Predilection", an interactive installation by Melissa Bouwman.
Of course, the moving windows will be best viewed after dark, and since 8th and Broadway is a little removed from the Art Walk action, don't be discouraged to make the walk!
Projections will appear nightly through September 11, 2008. Mahoy says other locations are currently being considered along Broadway and throughout the Historic Core.
