new “latin” cafe bakery refreshes gritty streetscape

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

8th & Hill Cafe BakeryRemember the Town Donuts & Chinese Food place that used to sit on the corner of 8th and Hill?

Neither do we, and it doesn’t sound very appetizing… angioplasty anyone?

In its place, a new perky little joint called 8th & Hill Cafe and Bakery has set up shop, just in time for Meruelo Maddux’s new Union Lofts project to open across the street soon.

The cafe opened only four months ago and bills itself as a “True Latin Cuisine Experience.” While they do offer empanadas and refried beans, the eatery’s tagline is a little misleading. According to the owner, their menu of pre-prepared breakfast and lunch foods changes daily and can range anywhere from penne pasta to cheese pizza. They also offer a small selection of petite cookies and other freshly made pastries.

While I have to admit the cafe doesn’t offer many frills, the interior is refreshing with pumpkin-colored walls, a plasma television and the aroma of fresh coffee brewing. My only complaint is they close promptly at 2:30pm Monday thru Saturday with no Sunday hours.

Once the new Union Lofts residents move into the ‘hood, that could all change. After all, Mode and Colori Kitchen are the only other options nearby, though Kelly’s Coffee & Fudge is on its way.
