blowfish sushi coming to south park — and not at l.a. live

Anyone in South Park like sushi?

Back in December we broke the story that the Kor Group was planning a new ground-floor restaurant/lounge after moving into their headquarters building at 12th and Flower.

Now, Eater LA has the scoop with the details of the new tenant:  San Francisco-based Blowfish Sushi to Die For have announced they are shutting down their West Hollywood venue while they begin to build out their new Downtown LA location.

Though itself a trendy concept, Blowfish Sushi offers a more scaled-down alternative for South Park sushi fans who may not want to shell out the big bucks for the ultra-modern Katsuya at LA Live once that opens later this year.  Blowfish Sushi to Die For is set for a Spring 2009 opening.

South Park residents:  What do you think of the announcement? Let us know in the comments!

If they keep the same happy hour specials as the WeHo location, I’m so there!

any other scoop on the restaurants opening at l.a. live?

I know their outdoor patio is going to be a small one on the west side between the building and the metro tracks – but it would be cool if they took part of the parking lot on the east side of the building and make a real big and swank outdoor area. LA has such nice weather and we need more places to sit outside – speacially on summer evenings – and enjoy the sights and sounds of downtown. They want to be on the west side to attract the staple/la live crowd but all the south residences are on the east side an it will create a nice synergy with the planned restaurants in those buildings.

PS – i dont like tranquility base glass wall around the outdoor area. It cuts the restaurant from the street. They put it up to keep the furniture secure but perhaps they could have done something else for security or make the glass clear so you can see through it.

Nice to see blowfish infusing some life into this area. It is quite dead right now but not for long!

Blowfish coming to SP is a huge move! The WeHo location was great and always had a good crowd there. This should bring a lot of energy to our neighborhood and convince other restauranteurs to invest in DTLA too outside of LA Live. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Tranquility has the glass to serve two purposes, the one you mentioned and to create the feel of being sequestered in the city… I do not see anything beautiful around tranquility that I would want to look at. It may not be visible from the street but I personaly like that… I feel like I am in an oasis, not in a pre-occupied downtown area waiting to be embraced. Perhaps after Downtown gets out of “pull-ups training pants” and grows up a little more the glass will change.

Nice! And Southpark continues to fill in…this district continues to get better and better. BTW, assuming no more city delays, BottleRock is planning completion by October and Rivera26 completion for November. Fingers crossed…

Nathan: There’s no way BottleRock will be done by October. That’s their (management’s) official line though, “Two more months.” Add in the necessary inspections and I honestly don’t see it opening before year’s end.

Rivera, on the other hand, may meet their build-out projection, but again… city inspections will probably add a couple months to that, meaning early 2009.

Inspections are tougher to pass when you’re building out a brand-new space that never housed any restaurant before.

YAY!!!! ANOTHER SUSHI PLACE!!!! Because you just can’t get enough sushi, coffee or yogurt around here! (yes Virginia, that is sarcasm)

I don’t mind more retail outlets opening even if they are sushi, coffee, etc…. cafes that we already have. I think at the very least it will make downtown more pedestrian friendly. You are right in that it would be nice to have a larger variety of shops to browse, but it definitely beats empty dark streets anyday.

Does anyone know what the status is regarding Tom Gilmore’s plan to open two restaurants on spring and fourth or Barry Shy planning his 15 story tower on main? I also heard there will be a large restaurant opening on the patio of the stock exchange building. I live in the area and would love for there to be more life at night although things have gotten much better over time. I just wouldn’t mind have the streets sprawling like Times Square or the Gaslamp quarters.

Anon: Those two restaurants have been put on hold. Check out our announcements about Shaily and La Puerta here: http://www.angelenic.com/2459/hot-month-in-the-city-august-downtown-restaurant-news/

Is anybody counting the ratio of sushi joints we got downtown? Panini opens, and is packed on day one, because people like comfort food and a breakfast/lunch/dinner-type restaurant. Folks, I think downtown has reached sushi-saturation.

Thanks for the link Rich.

I agree that we do have enough sushi options at this point but I walk around downtown and also see countless for lease signs and streets that are almost lifeless. I too would like to see more comfort food, different restaurants, etc…. but I am just saying that first and foremost we should all be clamoring for more life on the streets.

This will in turn bring in more residents, the streetcar, etc……. I now try to spend all my entertainment money in downtown whenever possible to help all these businesses out.

We do not have any deal with Kor. It’s one of several places we’re considering, true. We’ll let you know when this is final.

18 Rich Alossi { 08.18.08 at 11:42 pm }

Loftexpert: While I couldn’t reach anyone directly at Blowfish since the current location is now closed, outgoing message on their voicemail specifically stated they are moving to 1212 S Flower Street in Downtown LA.

Any clarification?

Yeah, I would say somebody is jumping the gun and thanks for bringing it to our attention.
