opportunity to partake in a downtown ‘s first public csa program
Not a fan of overpriced supermarkets? Afternoon farmers’ markets too inconvenient? Grand Central Market looking a little less grand these days?
Back in April, angelenic introduced the alternative of a Community Supported Agriculture Farmshare Program (CSA) to the Downtown community — a neighborhood arrangement where residents can pay to receive fresh produce (organic fruits, veggies, and herbs) direct from growers in tidy little boxes delivered every two weeks at set pickup points.
Just two weeks prior, Eastern Columbia resident Peter Johnson and some of his neighbors had already spearheaded an effort through Tierra Miguel Foundation to bring a CSA program to his building, which recently finished its first summer season with about 10 subscribers.
“It’s a little different than going to the farmers market and picking out a few things. I never know what’s going to be in the box. Mother nature determines that. Because of the surprise factor, every delivery is like a Top Chef challenge,” relates Johnson in an email this morning.
With the start of fall season approaching September 5, Johnson is looking to recruit a few new members to fill additional slots to keep the program in place. Anyone is welcome to join!
The season runs through December and costs $350. All scheduled deliveries would be made at Eastern Columbia’s front desk. If you’re interested in signing up for Downtown’s first CSA program, you can contact Tierra Miguel directly or leave a comment below, making sure to fill in the email field.
-supermarkets or mid-day farmers’ markets: do we have an alternative?

Hey, I think this is a great idea, but on their pledge form it seems like you have to sign up for the entire year in advance, as opposed to just a season. I’m not sure if it’s going to work out for me quite yet, so I’d like to try it out just for the season. Is that possible?
Thanks,
Sue
Yes, Sue, you can sign up for just one season. Feel free to email or call the farm and ask them questions, too. Real nice folks there.
Best, Peter
We’re gearing up for the Winter Season of Downtown’s CSA. If any of DT’s residents or workers are interested, the same contacts in the above post apply. Contact the farm and tell them you are interested in the Eastern Columbia CSA. Also, I can answer question in this space.
The fall season was a big success. We expanded our numbers and the farm delivered some truly delicious produce to us.
Happy New Year!
Peter
