Downtown Los Angeles Blog

south park’s fashion cafe is open

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

After delays courtesy of DWP and other city departments, Fashion Cafe is finally a reality. Located in Grand Hope Park underneath the Renaissance Towers Apartments and across from FIDM, it promises to offer yet another gelato opportunity for South Park residents.

They’re shooting for a Euro theme - the staff were all sporting black berets and red shirts, though not much else is fashionable about the place.

The menu looks pretty extensive and may give Panini Cafe a run for the lunch-time crowd. Prices are also significantly lower, with paninis starting at $6.95, though the selection is limited. Nonetheless, Fashion Cafe promises sandwiches, wraps, salads and soups.

Good news: nothing on this menu is more than $7.50!

A few surprising things to note, though — for a place that aspires to be Euro and serve a student crowd, only two types of coffee are offered - and by types, I mean sizes: short and tall. The hours are also a bit limiting, from 7:00am to 5:00pm, making this another Downtown place that shuts its doors before dinner.

I went today around 4:40 pm, but the place was already closing up shop. All the gelato was back in the freezer, but apparently there’s mango, raspberry, cookies and cream, triple expresso and chocolate, among others to choose from if you can make it there in time.

I tried the chocolate in a single scoop (the piccolo), and it was the tiniest scoop I’ve had in a while, but it’s possible I’ve just gotten used to Coldstone’s huge servings. It also doesn’t help that it tasted a bit like chalk.

Still, it’s welcome to have another affordable dining option in the neighborhood.

I went in today for their Ciao Bella gelato and thought the scoops were small too. But damn, I love me some good gelato. Hopefully they will rotate their flavors. Ciao Bella makes a nice variety of flavors such as key lime pie, fresh chocolate mint, gingersnap cookie and yogurt.

I’m all about decent sized portions. I would be reluctant to visit a place that gives “tiny” portions, unless it was DIRT CHEAP.

I went to Fashion Cafe last week and I try Mango Sorbet it almost test like I was eating Mango so fresh so tasty .I had bought Ciao Bella Gelato in the pass from Whole Foods they have the best quality and the taste .They told me that they are going to rotate their flavors occasionally. I ask them why Gelato is More Expensive then Ice Cream they told me because of the natural ingredients they use.
I’m fine to pay extra dollar to get good quality Gelato.I will go back to have some more Gelato.
