get to know your bartenders at the edison

So it’s not quite the super exclusive club of The Doheny, but the Sunday speakeasy event at Andrew Meieran’s The Edison certainly makes one feel like a member of Cedd Moses’ chosen people.
The event, which appears to be held weekly, is hosted in the posh 1920’s-themed VIP lounge of The Edison’s Radio Room bar.
Instructions for the The Radio Room event came from Marcos Tello, the Moses “mixologist” shunned from of The Doheny for inviting a blogger into the invite-only club.
Put on for the LA “cocktail community,” Tello promised, “In true speakeasy fashion, we will have a small featured cocktail list, a delicious array of spirits to enjoy, and live jazz.”
Attendees enter through a special entrance to get to the secret back room, so don’t expect a red carpet welcoming or valet service — but the The Radio Room is certainly worth the sacrifice.
Tello has crafted a selective set drink list for the night, though at $14 a pop you may want to be selective about your drinks as well.
If you’re looking for suggestions, take mine and opt for the Mai Tais, which are the the most delicious I’ve ever had — a bold statement from someone familiar with the fine ingredients and spirits of Moses’ Seven Grand and The Doheny.
I missed this week’s performance, but the live jazz on August 10 featured a grand dame singing in a deep, melancholy timber and a band with an upright base. The crowd was dressed for the occasion, with most women wearing cocktail dresses.
To stay informed about these sorts of events, one needs to get acquainted with Tello and claim a slot on his email list — or befriend one of the other barmen at The Edison, Seven Grand or The Doheny.
Like blogs who exposed the Moses’ top-secret private club, by writing about this I too may never be allowed to visit the The Radio Room again.
Nonetheless, it is worth sharing with the angelenic community, for it’s an extraordinary event in a beautifully adorned room with exquisite drinks.
I’m not sure who all these members of the cocktail community are, but it’s comforting to know you are part of something just a little bit smaller in LA not many people know about.

wait so that marcos guy WAS kicked out? i read that post on LAist too but there’s a comment at the bottom that said he wasn’t actually fired from the doheny..
sources tell me that marcos has been at the doheny, but they’ve seen him in front of the bar rather than behind it. so he’s still working for cedd and crew, but sources say not behind the bar at doheny. but choosing the drink list for a speakeasy is pretty neat compensation.
Nico, I think he was suspended, but ended up leaving anyway.
Yes, he’s working at the Edison, apparently.
Also my bad here. Cedd Moses is not behind the Edison - even though his barmen are all there, which confused me. 213, Moses group that was originally with Marc Smith, split over the Edison and different visions. So it’s not a Moses operation. See: http://www.lamag.com/featuredarticle.aspx?id=8432&page=3

Thanks for the heads up. Im going to sniff around and see if I cant get on that list.
Last night a friend and i went to check out the Radio Room at the Edison in DTLA. When we arrived we attempted to order drinks from the bar and were told they only have table service for the night. When my friend and I attempted to order our “usual” drinks, we were told by a very nice waitress, the types of drinks we could order were on a menu she pointed too. She went on to explain the “idea” of the Radio Room was to enjoy “specialty” drinks, created by their bartender, err, I mean “mix-ologist” for the minimal cost of $14.00. Needless to say, we got up and left.
I think this only lasted a couple of weeks…definitely not happening anymore….what happened?
I’ve been getting e-mails from The Edison promoting their “cabaret” in the Radio Room on Tuesday nights. Doors open at 7pm. Maybe they just switched the night from Sunday to Tuesday.
