tony jones restaurant ‘empire’ falls

Empire Restaurant's Building For Lease, Downtown Los AngelesA few weeks ago when allegations of Mode’s abysmal problems surfaced, it became only a matter of time before we would run this headline.

Tony Jones’ yet-to-open Empire restaurant, which has been under construction at 8th and Flower next to the Ritz Milner Hotel, has raised the white flag before it could ever get off the ground.

“For Lease” signs now present on the venue’s would-be two-story structure indicate the property’s landlord is on the market for a new tenant.

This does not bode well for controversial restaurant owner Jones who seems to be experiencing turbulent times at his current businesses Royale on Wilshire and Mode.

This is the building which housed “Our Lady Chapel” (a small but fondly remembered Catholic church) for over 40 years. The pastor, Fr. Kolling, retired due to health problems and Cardinal Mahoney decided to close the chapel rather than assign another priest to it. I went there for many years and no matter what they put there, it’ll always have a special place in my heart for what it used to be. :-)

On Sunday mornings in the Spring and Summer when the Dodgers were in town, Vin Scully could be found observing Mass at the Our Lady Chapel before heading up to Chavez Ravine to announce that afternoon’s game.

Here’s a link to an old web page of mine where I posted a nice drawing showing how it used to look: http://www.angelfire.com/ca5/atheistgal/ourlady.html

Boy I hope another 24-hour restaurant will go in there. That’s our informal 24 hour corner right there, with IHOP and Subway, and Denny’s and The Pantry a block west.

Wow! I was wondering if Mode had ever opened. I met Tony throught a friend at The Royale and according to the “plan”, Mode was going to be the schiznit with a fashion runray, and showers for the models etc. It was a unique idea I thought but I guess he couldn’t quite pull it together.

Mode’s concept was great and so was the food, too bad that was all.

I used to work at the Royale. Anthony Jones is untrustworthy. He is also incapable of owning a business that pays its employees and suppliers

Amen to Jonathan Taylor. His grantwriting business is also under attack — http://www.nptimes.com/08Jun/npt-080615-2.html. He is being sued by several vendors. Watch out for this man!

I am one of those beginning a legal process with Anthony Jones. If anyone else wishes to join me, I welcome the company!
