worldly tunes ascend on disney concert hall
With MOCA’s Murakami exhibit wrapping up in Little Tokyo, other international taste-testers are lining up for your cultural fix.
Beginning February 21, four of the world’s most respected musical artists are bringing four corners of the globe to Downtown over a series of concerts.
The World Music at Walt Disney Concert Hall event, presented by the LA Phil Harmonic, is scheduled to feature performances by The Chieftains, Eva Ayllón, Asha Bhosle and the Kronos Quartet over the next several months.
Have no idea who any of them are? I’ve included some descriptor blurbs to educate you.
Thursday, February 21 @ 8pm
The Chieftains
Gaelic music by the Emerald Isle’s most famous traditional Irish group. Expect some jig playing, reels and airs with “natural lilt and abandon.”
Didn’t quite catch that? Allow me to simplify: Honky-Tonk from Ireland.

Friday, March 7 @ 8pm
Eva Ayllón
Also known as the”Queen of Lando,” this African/Spanish performer from Peru is known for her musica criolla style. There will be lots of “flamenco phrases, complex pulsating rhythms and sweet folkloric melodies.”
You think that description is too “flowery”? You should see her press photo.

Sunday, April 27 @ 7:30pm
Asha Bhosle
This living legend of Bollywood has sung many, many songs in her long, long career as a playback artist. She’s rivaled her sister, Lata Mangeshkar, for the Guinness Book of World Records title for the singer with the more recorded songs ever – 12,000!!
With that repertoire expect a late, late night.

Saturday, May 3 @ 8pm
Kronos Quartet
They’ve saved the best for last.
Teaming with Inuit throat signer Tanya Tagaq and composer Derek Charke, this Canadian string quartet will feature unique takes on music by Sigur Rós and Xploding Plastix, among others. The musical collaboration is titled ‘Nunavut’, named after the largest and coldest territory of northern Canada.
Hmmm… that explains the Inuit, Icelandic and Norwegian connection.
