inside the completed belmont station complex
This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.
As a follow-up to our August 15 opening coverage of the Belmont Station Apartments, angelenic brings you an inside look at the residential complex sitting on top of a key site in the history of our city’s long-lost streetcar transit system.
Developer Essex Property Trust has delivered a quality addition to this far-flung corner of Downtown, not to mention, bringing some pride back to the decaying remnants of the original Belmont train station, which once shuttled early Angelenos from Downtown to Hollywood via underground rail. Decades of graffiti paint layers were removed to restore the two landmarks, soon to be backdrops for a new community dog park.
The completed four-story structure contains 275 units ranging from 520 square-feet to over 1,800 square-feet, leasing out at $1,600 to $4,300 per month.

Is that a door in the sealed off portal? I guess I didn’t realize that these rail lines were underground all the way to Hollywood - what happened to the tunnels? Are they still down there? just sealed off?
I was there over the weekend as well. Very cool amenities at the Beltmont Station. Also, the Community Lounge is defiintly one of the best I’ve seen (free coffee!).
Remember, all that junk is included in the price of your rent, whether you use it or not. When I lived at Mozaic I almost never took advantage of the amenities, but I definitely paid for them.
The thing about private resident lounges is that the energy is typically very low… I’d much prefer a coffee shop on the ground floor.
Anyone wondering how all this new housing in downtown L.A. is being greeted so far?
There’s some information on the Internet to prospective renters at LA Canvas and Glo. The first is located on Bixel (?) at Second St (right next to the noisy Pasadena Freeway), and the second, Glo, is on Wilshire Blvd. LA Canvas appears to have an occupancy rate up to 70%, and the other may be as high as 90%.
The latter is surprising, since whenever I drive by Glo at night, most of its windows, at least those facing Wilshire, look totally dark.
But if those figures are correct, they’re not that bad, considering those 2 apartment buildings started renting within the past year or so, and considering the ongoing problems of the local housing scene.
How things will turn out for Belmont Station, given the even greater amount of new housing that’s now being prepared for a series of grand openings, and that Belmont will be competing with, should be very telling.
this is so 1990’s
I love these designs, oh, LA!
This looks more like a hotel then an apartment complex. Maybe it should be the Blemont Station Hotel, with a small red car souvenir shop.
Baxter:
I know this project is leasing out very well. Not only from what I was told by the leasing directors, but considering the location, I couldn’t with the steady stream of people coming in for tours during the time I was there.
To answer Matt: The tunnel went from the subway terminal buidling to the portal that now bears a mural of the red car. From that point on, the cars ran on surface tracks to Hollywood, the Valley and Glendale. When the Bonaventure Hotel was constructed in 1974, the tunnel beneath held no value beyond nostalgia. So instead of terminating at 4th and Hill, the tunnel now abruptly ends at 4th and Figueroa at the base of the Bonaventure.
Love the tunnel. Was it really necessary to build this thing on top?
Really? This location is still kindof funky, I think. I’m surprised they can fill up with rents that high for that location.
to each his own, but i remember a little cheer form high school that seems apropos…
U-G-L-Y
You ain’t got no alibi
YOU UGLY!!
the decor is, as Seb said, better suited for a hotel. far too theme-y for my taste.
I’m so happy - and relieved - to see these photos! I was afraid that the developers would simply destroy or bury the historical tunnel and substation. On the contrary, it looks like they’ve gone to some pains not only to preserve them, but to restore them to their former glory! Since developers don’t always do this, these folks deserve some applause.
this apartment complex is amazing! i went for two visits and decided to rent a studio, which is really a small 1 bedroom as the sleeping area is totally separate and big enough for a bed and a dresser. when i was looking for a place, i knew exactly what i wanted. i love traveling and staying in 4 class hotels and i wanted something with a 4 star hotel feel, and this TOTALLY has it. that’s not something to be ashamed of; that’s something to celebrate. and for the record, there is *nothing* cold or impersonal about any of the common areas of the building. the lounges are cozy — i’m so totally going to curl up in a corner with my laptop and write. and the rent is very fair (especially for me since i came in at the time they were doing a free 2 month special on the 2nd and 3rd month! i believe they’re doing a free 1 month special now) considering all you get. i’m moving from hollywood where for just a little less than i’ll be paying at belmont station, i get to look for street parking for 20 minutes every night, oh joy and share laundry facilities with over 400 of my closests friends. at belmont station, not only do i get the business center with free wi-fi, the community loung with free coffee, the fitness center, the yoga/dance studio, the gorgeous (and brand spanking new as the entire place is) pool and jacuzzi with outdoor fireplaces, but…..i have a washer and dryer IN MY APARTMENT. ‘nuff said!
oh, and the building is “green”, how cool and important is that!
OMG and I forgot to mention the screening room. Talk about a Netflix night!
Oh! And I forgot to mention the 24/7 security guard with the numerous cameras in the lobby!
Wow Patti, I had the SAME EXACT four reactions! I’m on my way to sign a lease right now! We’ll be neighbors! Let’s hang out in the jacuzzi later! I have the cutest new bikini! I’ll bring some of my cute friends too! Belmont Station is the best pre-fab apartment mega-complex in the city! The best in the world even!
oh yeah, one more thing patti, did your check from Belmont Station clear yet? (mine hasn’t yet.)
