lapd hq design comes into focus after speedy progress

LAPD Headquarters Under Construction, Downtown Los AngelesIt’s only been six weeks since we last checked in with the LAPD’s new postmodern headquarters replacement under construction along 2nd Street between Spring and Main.

At that point the office tower had just received its first few exterior panels and the steel frame skeleton was mostly characterless. Since then, noteworthy visual progress has been made on the structure’s snazzy facade (just ask the residents of the Higgins Building next door).

The innovative geometric effect created by the cream-colored slats and reflective glass wall look much more gripping in reality than illustrated by the project renderings. Judging from these early indicators, DMJM has created a worthy competitor to Thom Mayne’s neighboring stainless steel masterpiece.

Does anyone know what happens to Parker Center after this building opens? If it’s going to be demo-ed, is there a plan for the land?

It will be demolished but the preliminary plans for the space call for new county office space.

One would hope the demolition of the old Parker Center will jump-start the long-delayed park proposed on the block with the Japanese-American Museum and MOCA. This park would be a delightful addition to this block. It is unfortunate that is has been delayed for so many years.
