siptea zen teahouse opens on broadway

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

Broadway’s first teahouse opened for business today — finally! — according to owner Laura Stewart. SipTea’s storefront first appeared back in February, but delays due to permitting and inspections pushed the opening date back by several months.

An Asian-inspired Zen theme — Stewart prefers the term “urban hip” — defines the small joint near Broadway’s intersection with 9th Street, in stark contrast to traditional English tea parlors defined by flowery teapots. Organic and eco-friendly touches also play a big role in the overall concept.

Quick bites like sandwiches, salads and desserts are being served, and the shop naturally boasts an extensive collection of teas from which to choose, many award-winning or selected for their uniqueness. Teas can be ordered blended or as a soda or latte, hot or over ice.

As previously reported, coffee will not be served due to its strong aroma interfering with the tea experience, but free WiFi may be enough to win over some of you stubborn espresso drinkers.

Enjoyed a delicious turkey sandwich from Sip Tea this afternoon.

The lighted storefront makes such an enormous difference on that section of Broadway’s streetscape. The warm glow of light spilling out on to the sidewalk and patrons inside, behind the big, glass windows, enjoying a bite or a cup were wonderful sights to behold.

Right On!- I just walked by last week, can’t wait to try it.
I love me my TEA. Great for this Fall/Winter. Nice touch that they have some food too. The location is excellent-centrally located and plenty of foot traffic. Maybe Johnny Depp or John Stamos will drop by, we can wish.

Agreed with klaus: Too much of Downtown seems to think everyone just hibernates every Sunday. For many people, Saturday is errand day, and Sunday is the day they have to relax and visit the restaurants and shops - the ones that are all closed Downtown.

Here’s hoping most of Broadway will be as nice and is another sign of better shops to come.

Hey, I didn’t check, was Popeye there?

(As seen previously on this website in the interior computer renderings.)

I tried the turkey sando with a nice side salad in balsamic, very nice.
I’m not much of a tea guy but I gave it a try.
I’d give it more of a try if this place was open on sundays.
Shorter hours or am hours only but why never on sundays, just don’t get it.
And no there were no dock workers, I looked.
