tender no more: acclaimed culver city eatery deal falls through

Fans of Culver City’s Tender Greens were ecstatic when those behind the popular restaurant confirmed they were looking Downtown and needed suggestions.

Well, the wait is over, but there’s no happy ending to this story:  Tender Greens has stopped the search for a restaurant space to host its simple, small-scale comfort food concept after a deal fizzled for a location at 7th and Grand.

The combined forces of the softening housing market and landlords with unrealistic views of the current struggles facing Downtown were the dealbreakers.

Said co-owner Erik Oberholtzer: “Given the scaled back development in the wake of the housing crisis we still consider Downtown a ‘risk’ and need a landlord who understands this.”

Officially, Downtown remains in the restaurant’s long-term plans, but there’s nothing on the radar for the time being.  A West Hollywood location is coming soon, while a deal in Hollywood is being finalized.

Devastated?  We know.  Tell us how you feel.

Me too. But don’t hold that frown too long. Rich and I have some big news that will make it all better!

Yes – definately sad news. But I see their point given the slowdown. We cant win em all. After the recent news of the additional restaurants opening as part of LA Live – this is somewhat less tragic. Cant wait to hear the “big news” Stephen =).

I guess the only ones having “tender greens” downtown will be the goats..i mean dry weeds :) I guess Hollywood and Weho are sure bets compared to downtown LA.
At least they are realistic compared to the Lime Cafe and Mode folks.

Rich and Stephen, I assure you that Tender Greens fully intends on opening in DTLA. It’s owners are long on Downtown and I envision them opening in 2 yrs.
