blu l.a. cafe to reanimate pacific electric lofts 2848544927_8718f56956_m downtown los angelesThe Pacific Electric Lofts will soon welcome a new eatery as blu LA Cafe finishes construction next door to the infamous Cole’s PE Buffet, itself undergoing a full remodel. Available renderings show a hip design enhancing the historic, brick facade on 6th Street set just below the sidewalk — a combination in this city that’s uniquely Downtown.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served at the cafe, which is set to open from 7:00am to 11:00pm Monday through Thursday and 2:00am on Friday and Saturday.  Opening should occur within 90 days.

On the menu are omelets, waffles, polenta and breakfast sandwiches available in the mornings; paninis, burgers, salads and serious entrees for lunch and dinner. An extensive desserts menu of tarts, pastries, pies and cakes is hard to overlook.

With new galleries, retail, residences, nightlife and dining in various stages of completion, is it that big of a stretch to say that 6th & Main is the new 4th & Main?

Do you know when Coles will reopen? I loved that place. Blu.la looks great too! With the Nickle open, that whole stretch of Main is getting a lot more inviting.

Or could we say that the new Main is the old Main…circa 1915 or so…okay, that might take a while. Call me when they build 20 new movie theaters…

who are the fine folks behind this eatery?

Yes! Go 6th street! :)

YES!!! This is exactly the kind of place this area needs. I’m very excited about this place. Are they going to serve beer & wine? I love the idea of a later-night spot, and it looks amazing, has anyone gone by to see how far they are? I’m going to head out this weekend.

p.s. I just looked more closely at the rendering and it does look like they’ll be serving wine :-) I’m so there.

Nice, way to go to the my friend, Dena Foster, who is the project architect and my friend Joseph Plummer, who is the designer of the banquette bar casework!

Oh, by the wway. I think this IS where Coles was… or what Coles is being turned in to.

I have been saying 6th & Main will be the next 4th & Main for 2 years now.

Now, if we can just get that pet store to move out and put in a restaurant or bar! I was dissapointed to see a store move in there that closes at night. This area should be lit up and open and night! Not, a closed up store for pets. Can’t they move somewhere else where they are not taking up such prime real-estate?

And, when is that Jazz club moving into the corner spot in the PE lofts? Why is that just an art studio?? Come-on developers… isn’t anyone paying attention??

As soon as they develop the corner with two restaurants, it will be the most happenin block in downtown. -John

^Yes, the design is great! Love the cool blue color palette. This is the space next door to Coles — Coles will be reopening in its same space, sometime.

Agreed this corner has huge potential, and restaurants will help that vision along, but no one wants Pussy & Pooch to leave the corner. They’re great for the neighborhood and not every space needs to be a place to eat and/or drink.

It’s all good.

If we want to get an idea of where Main Street is going, just look back where it was… 5, 10 years ago. Back then, none of us would be having this conversation. So be it a pet store, a bar or a cafe, activity of any kind is better than no activity of any kind.

It’s a work in progress and it…like Spring Street…will find its personality.

(And wouldn’t a street car look good passing by every 10 minutes or so?)

Pussy and Pooch is an a nicely designed and interesting concept. Now if it just had a wooden sign that said “Lots of Pet Stuff” then I would complain also.

All we residents need to do is do more walking/spending and all the businesses will come.

Looks like Saturday will be difficult for me to catch breakfast, it ends at 10AM!…at least have breakfast till 11AM. Well, there is always Sunday..

John you need to get your facts right

I do not know who Dena Foster is, however, I can tell you she is not the project architect.

15 MisterY { 09.14.08 at 8:43 pm }

I don’t know who Jessica L. is, but I do know that Dena Foster is Project Manager/Designer for Blu Cafe along with Alvin Oei through Randall-Baylon Architects. They will be serving wine & beer. Also, Cole’s will be reopening in its original location. For any further inquiries feel free to visit randall-baylon.com. Thanks. -MisterY

The cafe’s design has a masculine feel to it. I don’t think it was a woman.

It doesnt matter who the “Main” desinger is, politics and labels aside, I would say the real designer of Blu is the community itself because through the whole process we have had the unique opportunity to work closely with local artists from painters and glass blowers to iron fabricators to mold it into what it has become. Together, we designed it with a strong emphasis on art since it lies at the heart of gallery row. This is a cafe dedicated to the local community and the history of the building which we hope that you all will enjoy. -Alvin

A big yawn… downtown still smells like piss and dog shit no matter how many coats of paint you slap on, buddy - oh, and good luck with your hipster approach to an eatery.

Tara you sound like a very boring person. Of course it smells bad, its a major city what the hell do you expect? I guess according to you, there is no hope for downtown. Too bad because I live here right on the corner of 4th and main and I think that this place has alot of potential to grow and it’s because of small places like this who strive for something, dare i say “different”

Yeah for more late night spots =)

The menu looks interesting. It is disappointing that breakfast isn’t offered all day because it looks more interesting and inviting than the lunch and dinner foods(at least for me it is). At least they could offer a limited night time breakfast menu. It will be interesting what they charge and how the food tastes.

I live very close to this new spot. It just opened and my boyfriend and i decided to order their signature burger and watch a movie, which turned out to be a great idea! I was actually excited when i saw the menu. Something nice and somewhat different in a short walking distance. The prices are fine for what they are serving. The burger was, im so happy to say, pretty amazing! The fries were awesome too. (also, they deliver to PE lofts..just so you know) All in all, im happy that i can go downstairs, grap a seat, eat some steak, and sip some wine until 2 am. This is what my area needs, and i hope they do well so that more people do the same thing. And i agree, stop shutting down everything! We live downtown for christsake. I mean, don’t artsy people stay up late? Look at Petes cafe…

If you think downtown is still 10 years away please stay on the westside…too much bridge and tunnel these days…
