Ilan Hall, the winner of Top Chef’s second season and current Downtown resident, is opening a new restaurant in the Arts District, reports Eater LA.
Tentatively called Gorbals (after a Glasgow, Scotland neighborhood), a menu described as “old Jewish food date-raped by bacon” may sound quirky, but it’s all about Hall’s growing-up with an Israeli mother’s cooking.
With a sous chef and general manager at his side, the restaurateur-to-be hopes to open by New Year’s — even though no location has been chosen yet.
Astute readers may be scratching their heads considering that delays alone can eat up months of time — even for well-funded chain operations. Contractors and city inspectors have a way of dragging these things out.
Still, drive, a solid vision and the name recognition to back it up are worthy of support, even if things may be delayed a bit.

i’m not sure what old jewish food taste like, but anything date-raped or molested or even just harrassed by bacon is good by me.
I think my intese hatred of Ilan (he was such an ass on that show) prevents me from giving him any of my money.
What are we talking here? Potato knishes wrapped in bacon? Kasha varnishkes with bacon bits mixed in? Beef tongue and bacon sandwiches on crusty rye bread?

Horrible name!. Waaay too close to Goebbels, even worse choice because it’s Jewish influenced food.
However, the concept sounds good, and the Arts District (AD anyone?) could use a nice style, comfy pub. Most of the new population explosion in the AD is from insular Koreans/Japanese occupying the Mura, Savoy, and A2nd, who tend to wander towards Little Tokyo, and not the other direction.
I always thought it was just the editing that made him come across as a pig-headed ass on Top Chef. But a restaurant named Gorbals featuring “old Jewish food date-raped by bacon”? Maybe it’s going in next to the Eva Braun Daycare Center.
