breaking: ford’s filling station coming to the rowan

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

Consider this the turning point for Historic Core dining.

Hot on the heels of Culver City-based Tender Greens’ fizzled deal, another staple of that Westside restaurant scene is heading east: Angelenic has learned that Ford’s Filling Station will be taking a 5,000-foot space in the Rowan Lofts Building at 5th and Spring, according to multiple sources.  The move Downtown was confirmed by the restaurant’s Director of Operations Emily Beretta. [ed: Updated.  Papers have not officially been signed yet.]

The latest in a series of high-profile Historic Core restaurant announcements recently is helping position Downtown as a dining destination.

Co-owned by chef Ben Ford and Emily Beretta, the menu at the Culver City location consists of cured meats, cheeses, flatbreads, and comfort food done well (LA Times, LAist, Foodblogging LA).

As for the space itself, the restaurant will open out onto 5th Street as well as Harlem Place Alley, which we reported in April will be undergoing a significant transformation into a pedestrian-and-retail thoroughfare.  An estimated opening date has not been set.

More information to follow.

As excited as we are? Let us know!

Hah.

Every time you guys make a food related post, an alarm goes off in my loft.

Just wish this was opening up in my building.

Please tell me this isn’t the “BIG” announcement. Ford’s is pretty overrated. Good, but in a town of many many greats … not worth the trip.

Thats fantastic. - thanks to Rowan and Beretta for snagging this. FFS is a great restaurant and downtown needs more hi-end alternatives to the Patina group restaurants. I can really see that little pedestrian alley filled with people in the evening - dining, shopping, hanging out - expanding the activity hub that is currently centered around Petes. Keep up the good work Rowan agents! - you are perhaps our greatest advocate in “Bringing Back Spring Street!”

I’ve always had a great dining experience at Ford’s Filling Station and the fact you can frequently see the owner cooking up a storm with a big smile on his face makes it even better. My personal fave is the Kobe beef cheeks. YUM!

please, make this come true and give us an alternative to pete’s HORRIBLE SERVICE and frozen calamari that can’t decide whether it’s italian or asian.

Celia, it’s a sure thing that Tom and Trish have just added you to their seat-but-do-not-serve policy. You have just dished the queen and king’s restaurant!
