gallery scene in chinatown continues to expand
For several years the Chung King Road alleyway on the northern end of Chinatown has been ground zero for the artsy renaissance sweeping over the district.
New generation galleries and specialty shops have since captured a large chunk of the local retail market, and the robust daytime street life (including many fashionable types) indicates there is room for more.
Still settling in to a lofty space on Chung King Court following its January 25 opening is a new gallery called fifth floor. The showroom exhibits creative wares by local designers including ceramics, vases, jewelry and a woodland-inspired dog pad dubbed the “Mutt Hutt.”
Glass and wood tables, including the “El Coffee Table” piece designed by owner Robert Apodaca, are also available.
Around the corner facing Hill Street, another “flex” gallery known as North Hill is expected to arrive soon. The owner is currently working with the city to preserve the facade of her historic structure, which immediately neighbors Bonelli Contemporary Art Gallery. A preliminary description of North Hill reveals that art, furniture and other creations will be sold there.
New Downtowners looking for unique loft furnishings should consider venturing out to this little enclave that also encompasses new businesses in the busy Central Plaza across the street.
