downtown celebrates st. patrick’s day: eight bars (and a parade)

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

Pershing SquareWhat better way to spend your St. Patrick’s Day lunch break than reveling in … Pershing Square?

Don’t laugh. This year’s Los Angeles St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Monday, March 17, winds its way from the parking lots north of the 101, over the freeway and through the Civic Center via Main Street before ending at the oft-berated Pershing Square.

The route isn’t the most conducive to watching the parade go by, with construction and a lack of trees or street furniture along most of the stretch.

Once in the park, however, the Young Dubliners will be onstage from 12:30 to 2:00pm, and food and beverages (O’Doul’s) will be available for those who would brave such festival eats.

Green water in Pershing Square’s large fountain may be mistaken as a lack of proper maintenance rather than a festive gesture, though the city does contend that it will be dyed. You be the judge.

Now on to the nightlife!

Seven Grand, Downtown LACasey’s Irish Grill is the undisputed king of St. Patrick’s Day drinking Downtown, but newcomer Seven Grand features an extensive range of Irish whiskeys.

That’s not to say there aren’t a number of other establishments where you can have a great time. They may not all be flowing with green beer, but take a chance on some of these Downtown venues.

$2 Guiness and $2 Jameson from 6:00am to 3:00pm on Monday may be a great deal, but I’ve got to wonder just who will be drinking Jameson at 6:00am … Keep it all down with free mulligan stew.
