A new restaurant tentatively called Brauhaus has inked a deal to fill the old Discount Tire Centers structure on the corner of Olive and Olympic. According to owner Eugenia Chung, she and her husband Klaus Schmidt plan to open by the end of this year.

"It will be a German-themed restaurant with authentic German fare and beers,” she describes briefly. “Our name as ‘Brauhaus’ will be changed.”

More information will become available in mid-April.

Just two blocks away, Maui Wowi Hawaiian — a national retailer known for its coffees, smoothies and Hawaiian products — is coming to the former Museum of Neon Art space inside the Renaissance Tower Apartments at Olympic and Hope.

Construction is underway on the 1,500 square-foot space, which sits adjacent to the lively Grand Hope Park on the north side of the property.

Speaking of Hawaiian places, Jim at trainedmonkey has done a nice job with his very first First Look piece: Aloha Cafe, which has just opened at Honda Plaza in Little Tokyo. The restaurant serves a mix of Korean, Hawaiian and Japanese standards.

OK, we heard back from the owner of “Brauhaus” so I updated the post. If you already read it - there’s new information available now.

Hopefully, the build-out of the retail for Maui Wowi will overlook Grand Hope Park itself. At minimum, some tables to encourage people to linger and enjoy the park.

It won’t overlook the park, but it will connected well enough for there to be some lingering pedestrians. I’m sure the cafe’s umbrellas and patio tables will be visible from the park though.

It’s the ideal tenant for this location - so happy to see this going in.

If this helps, the park is directly to the left of this photo - so it’s almost connected:

Are there any tentative opening dates for either of these? It would be lovely to be able to get a smoothie and wander the park when summer comes. Ahh.

i can’t wait for the german restaurant. bring on the sauerbratens and the wiener schnitzels. glad to see that this ugly tire store will be transformed into something nice and useful… hopefully.

As a Ren. Tower resident, I’ve been waiting for something great to open in the old MONA spot since they left, but it seems bizarre that a “Coffee & Smoothie” shop is going in seeing as there’s one on the other end of the same building.

Walked by the discount tires place yesterday. I can’t wait to see how they turn that space into a restaurant. It’s either going to be extremely cool or a creepy disaster. Right now, everything about the exterior — and presumably the interior — screams oil change and, well, discount tires.

If the folks behind this place can make it work, then, wow, more power to them. I certainly look forward to seeing what they have in mind.

Any update on this German restaurant? It seemed like a cool idea but I haven’t seen any movement.

^ #10, I’ve been following up with the owners. There’s a little construction activity on-site (looks like new foundation being installed), but not much else. It may be a while.
