If you haven't walked along 6th Street between Spring and Main in the last couple of weeks, you probably had no clue two new clothing boutiques were coming to the ground floor of the SB Lofts.
Virtually overnight, East Coast-designer Rodrick Gilchrist with the help of his partner Aysegul Ikna has launched a new fashion studio and retail space specializing in women's attire. The modest shop, to be known simply as 'Rodrick Gilchrist,' debuted on Saturday, March 15.
The designer team will construct many of their unique garments and accessories in the rear workspace of the boutique, and aim to be known for edgy European apparel that is simple, high-end and changes with the seasons.
"There are many artists and fashionable types living here [in Downtown] who would love to own one-of-a-kind pieces," explains Ikna, who is also from the East Coast but originally from Turkey.
"We believe that Downtown LA will be better than New York's SoHo," she adds.
A small collection of men's garments will also become available.
The business follow the heels of two other fashion shops new to the Historic Core: Japan-based ESP (Extra Sensory Perception) and avant-garde label Comme des Garcons, the latter of which has made a splash in the local scene with its “guerrilla store” concept.
A mini collection of high-style clothing merchants are also transforming Downtown’s Chinatown neighborhood into a fashion hotspot.
