When angelenic first got word of a new bar & grill concept by the restaurateurs behind the small Market City Caffe chain, Morels French Steakhouse and Dragon Noodle Co., our first reaction was an enthusiastic “Finally!”
But frankly, we needed some convincing when told of the new restaurant’s location in an industrial section of Downtown known more for its gritty warehouses than good eats.
Our worries were soon allayed once we stepped inside the hopping eatery over lunch on a recent weekday. The cliche “packed like sardines” may be too obvious a descriptor for this Wholesale Seafood District locale, but the moderately sized dining area was full — a diverse crowd of Financial District suits, FIDM students, Produce District workers and seafood purveyors eating side-by-side.
The breakfast and lunch menus offer typical but well-done plates to lure diners to a neighborhood that tends to shut down in the evenings. But now that a liquor license for a full bar has been secured, the restaurant is beginning to push for a more local customer base. A “residential rewards program” will join recently expanded dinner hours to assist with that effort.
Residents of the nearby Arts and Industrial districts and Little Tokyo neighborhood may find Sixth Street Bar & Grill to be well worth the extra block’s walk.
Owner Chipper Pastron and partners Sal Casola and Matt Klein have reimagined the former Central City Cafe building, giving the facade a warm brick color scheme and redesigning the lofty interior with high-end kitchen appliances, dark wood flooring and new tables and chairs.
Pastron and his team had been looking in Downtown for several years before committing to the 6th Street location. After experiencing difficulties securing a retail space with some of the more prominent brokers Downtown, Pastron spearheaded a search of his own and landed at the corner of 6th and Central.
Despite the hurdles in coming Downtown, Pastron and his Market City Caffe Hospitality Group have faith in the local market.
“We really believe that Downtown Los Angeles has the potential for unbelievable growth,” he says without hesitation.
Plans for a second eatery inside the underground 505 Flower mall at City National Plaza indicate Pastron truly believes that statement. His follow-up venture will target the more established lunch crowd of the Financial District by offering high-quality burgers. A timeline for the new lunch spot has not been set.

I’ve been there several times. I like to support new downtown businesses. There is a nice selection of items on the menu. Service is fast and friendly. Food is good. Easy parking.
So what are the expanded night time hours?
Oops!

Nice! Thanks, might actually check it out tonight.
I’ll be crusing over there for breakfast this saturday, this place looks pretty cool.
I checked it out last night. Pretty good, the price range is right and it’s got a nice interior design. Cloth napkins! My roommate and I got there are 7:30pm and the place was empty and remained empty until we left. I had the Fish and Chips which was quite good, my roommate had the Chicken Parm sandwich which was “okay”. The passion fruit iced teas was delicious. I also ordered a dessert, an apple tart with ice cream, which was very good.
It’s a short bike ride away, so I might hit it up again to try some of their other offerings. The neighborhood is definitely a strange place for such a restaurant, and there was no business at all during the dinner hours, hopefully that changes.
just had lunch there. very tasty & reasonably priced. I had the fish & chips too—delish. My friends had a salad and the salmon, which was very good as well. the place looked good too, and we’re definitely going back for the happy hour specials, which looked extensive. I’d recommend it.
oh , yeah , now that the Central City East Dash will be running for 180 days starting this summer. I will also be able to make it out to the 6th street grill.
God it is good to be able to get places I need to without using the MTA busses

So the hours Nik stated above are the correct ones?
If that is true, why close so early at 2pm on Saturday, dude its spring and summer just around the corner
I go by that intersection about 8 times a week, can’t wait to trying it soon.
And im downtown LA adjacent by like 8 miles south east ..lol (thats what i tell myself anyways).
Nik, thanks for the updated hours.
I just had breakfast there this morning. Great place with good food at very reasonable prices. I’ll have to bring my boys back to catch a couple games at the place. We’ll be back for sure.
I tried going for breakfast this morning and the place was closed. The hours say it’s open Saturday at 7:30am. Am I mistaken?
we stopped by there for a late lunch last week, and generally liked it. it is a nice, big open space.
Went here for brunch on saturday and this place is great. i got the breakfast burrito and my friend got the french toast and both were perfect, and very reasonably priced. Was a sharp contrast to Tranquility Base’s brunch which is expensive, unexceptional and with terrible service.
back to 6th street cafe- i talked to the manager and he explained that they have happy hour every evening (which they’ll need to get people all the way out there):
Margarita Monday
Taco Tuesday
Free pizza when you order a pitcher Wednesday
Martini Thursdays
forgot what Fridays are
I would highly recommend their breakfast. Can’t wait to check out happy hour.
Two members of our crew ate here last week. Despite their protests, our entire crew had lunch here today. This is a very nicely appointed restaurant. The service is exemplary. It’s just unfortunate that the food, for the price point, or even far below their price point, is terrible. Had I paid $3.00 for their philly cheese steak sandwich, I would have been merely disappointed, but to cough up $12 and get about 2 oz. of beef and a sprinkling of cheese over a simple amuse bouche of peppers and onions is patently offensive.
Our driver requested fresh ground pepper for his chicken caesar salad, for the reason, he later told me, that that was the only thing he could think of that would give it any flavor. Our decorator’s turkey club contained dried-up husks of meat that purported to be turkey (she liked the bacon and avocado, which was the only portion of the sandwich she ate). Their thin crust pizza was inexplicably soggy (my sandwich was so un-satisfying as an entree that I sampled whatever anyone else didn’t want to eat), and their onion ring side (5 rings) was soggy and gummy.
I can only hope that this place either goes belly-up, and someone worthwhile in the kitchen takes over, or their current chef gets the message and starts producing palatable food. The bar looks nice, and I might stop in for happy hour, because I doubt they could screw up bottled beer. No bets on mixed drinks (go for the mojitos at Broadway Bar:FANTASTIC!)
