new all-digital channel would join espn at la live

ESPN step aside!

AEG, developer of LA Live and other large sports/entertainment facilities wordwide, is moving forward with plans to establish an all-digital television channel that would be based here in Downtown Los Angeles.

In an article this week from Variety, AEG President and CEO Tim Leiweke describes plans to launch a new lifestyle channel centered around music, sports, fashion and travel destinations, possibly televising concerts and events which take place at Staples Center and Nokia Theatre. The channel could be on its feet as early as next year.

The venture, a creative undertaking for an international real estate developer, is seen as an attempt to capitalize on the advent of the nation’s switchover to all-digital broadcasting this February.

“This lifestyle channel will have various means of distribution,” Leiweke said in the Variety piece, referring to prospective partnerships with area stations and other outlets for digital technology.

A $20 million broadcast facility being constructed inside the ESPN Zone building of LA Live would provide the necessary infrastructure for the channel, where the cable sports giant will be locating its new West Coast headquarters by Spring 2009.

Club Nokia, the third, “more intimate” live concert venue at LALive(if you can call a 2,000 seat theater intimate) is set to open on November 10 with a performance by Beck.

Somehow this prompts memory of the live television interlaced in The Fifth Element. I’m not sure if that is good or bad yet.

If we can get Ruby Rhod to anchor it, I’m all for it, Ben. You green?

This is great! People will see live broadcasts from L.A. Live, so they get to know more about the complex, and possibly come to like it!

Wow! I’ve been seeking backers/partners for a very like-minded ‘live broadcasting from LA Live’ channel for about a year now… when I bought the domain LALIVELY.com. I even inquired about getting LA LIVE (outdoor) screen time. (Hey, the big center-courtyard screen went up & on last night as I was walking home!). And, I’ve been building-out a “music, sports, fashion and travel” (and arts) network of TV sites for awhile now. Well, glad I got a head start! It should be easier getting backers now!
