scaling back angelenic

Looking for information on Downtown LA?

Angelenic is the essential news resource for those living, working and visiting Downtown Los Angeles. Check out our homepage for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

Dear readers,

As angelenic has grown over the past year, it’s been a life-changing experience. Making many new friends and meeting optimistic small-business owners and residents has been so fulfilling for Stephen and me.

Unfortunately, the demands on our time over the past few months have been so great that it’s finally caught up with us. Between a full-time career for Stephen, and both work and school for me, it’s become impossible to keep up.

Stephen has decided to leave angelenic, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to scale back as well. So even though I’ll still be posting here, the updates will be much less frequent.

I’m still hoping to make a career out of writing — preferrably about Downtown — but we’ll see where that takes me.

Once again, thank you for your encouragement and support over the past year.

See you around Downtown!

that’s a bummer. reading this blog been a great pleasure and escape for me, and can get in touch of what’s going on around downtown when I’m not able to live around there :-)

best of luck with future endeavor!!!

Rich wow its a mix bag of feelings, but I thought that after the survey you did of the readers, that you guys would increase the coverage.
But i guess it all comes down to economics.
Maybe the site traffic was not as high as needed to help generate significant revenue.
Anyways i understand your choice.
Sometimes we got to focus on our needs first before our wants.
As long as you continue posting even though it won’t be as frequent.
Sincerely appreciate it, your hard work with this website.
will continue to read it and visit it often.

Major bummer. As I’ve discovered though, running these blogs take a whole lot of time and energy, and time and energy cost money. I was always amazed at how frequent and in depth your posting was, and curious as to how you balanced that with the rest of your life. I was hoping your plan to bring on advertisers and monetize the blog would work, but alas. Best of luck, angelenic was a daily (multiple time a day usually) stop for me.

4 sebastian mele { 03.31.08 at 2:28 pm }

Same for me, I love this site. This was my lunch time escape. I hope it’s not the end.

5 sebastian mele { 03.31.08 at 2:35 pm }

Does anyone know of any other sites I can check out on downtown l.a. or hollywood developments.

6 Chris { 03.31.08 at 3:27 pm }

Worst. Day. Ever.

The glory days of angelenic will be missed.

7 vanessa acuna { 03.31.08 at 3:28 pm }

I am saddened by this news…I wish Stephen the best.

Los Angeles Downtown News has lots in store for all you blogger aficionados. I can’t disclose too much info except that the new site will be a lot more interactive than the current one…Coming Summer 2008!

Rich/Steve,

You guys have done a great job and I think you guys personally helped downtown Los Angeles develop and grow. I can’t tell you how many shops/restaurants i’ve been to where they credit you for bringing people in the door. That being said, if there is any help you need checking a place out, taking photos or anything else, i’ll be first to volunteer some time to keep what you guys started going. Best of luck and I hope to see you guys back at it again sometime in the future.

9 Downtown Charlie Brown { 03.31.08 at 4:03 pm }

As is the same with many of your readers, I am saddened by the news.
You guys put in a lot of work, and it showed.

I hope this isn’t the end of Angelenic. Maybe more stories submitted by your readers? The Ralph’s/Food Bank story was a great story and generated a lot of feedback. Perhaps enlist a team of downtowners that just enjoy writing to submit weekly stories.

What ever happens, I have thouroughly enjoyed your Blog and wish you both the best!

10 brian { 03.31.08 at 4:09 pm }

^ hey, that’s a great idea. why don’t you evolve into a community-written blog and solicit articles/info/scoops from residents?

11 Stephen Friday { 03.31.08 at 4:13 pm }

Charlie Brown / Brian:

I actually had a similar idea in mind this morning. Something like a public forum for residents to exchange retail openings, restaurant info, etc - maybe Rich and I could moderate on the back-end. It’s something we’re seriously considering.

How many of you would support that?

12 Dave Bullock { 03.31.08 at 5:03 pm }

Well I think you guys will shine in whatever endeavors you life leads you to. Personally I still think this is an April Fool’s gag. Either way though best of luck!

13 AUG { 03.31.08 at 5:15 pm }

April fool’s gag? If that’s true it’s a damn good one. I was very saddened to hear one of the Angelenic guys is leaving. I’ve come to rely on this site for all the going ons in downtown. Like others have said, I think you’ve done a huge service to the downtown community and I commend you. I hope it keeps up, even if in a scaled back form. There are probably some journalism students out there looking for an internship- why not enlist a few for free labor? Damn, I’d volunteer my time if I weren’t working 60+ hrs a week.

14 Jared { 03.31.08 at 5:34 pm }

I call April Fools

15 Don Garza { 03.31.08 at 6:08 pm }

Look , I suffer with Major Depression and you guys announcing this has me really bummed me out!!! I sure do hope it is an april fools gag…..You guys are awesome.

16 Rich Alossi { 03.31.08 at 6:24 pm }

Thank you all for the comments. Let me clear the air here, though: This is -not- an April Fool’s joke. I kind of wish I hadn’t announced it the day before April 1!

17 ksep { 03.31.08 at 6:41 pm }

oh man, this sux. this by far my favorite website.
good luck to both of you.

18 Tim { 03.31.08 at 6:54 pm }

Quick, cue the music…

And I am telling you
You’re not going.
You’re the best blog we’ll ever know.
There’s no way you can ever, ever go,
No, no, no, no way,
No, no, no, no way we’re livin’ without you……..

Rich. Stephen. You became part of my day. You will be missed.

19 Joe Cornish { 03.31.08 at 7:03 pm }

I’ll miss Stephen but you two guys are young and intelligent. It’s a good time for change…..and change is always a good thing when it’s a conscious choice. Go for whatever you two want or need, and make the best of it. You both have my best wishes! Joe

20 annabel lee los angeles { 03.31.08 at 7:31 pm }

I love this blog and will miss it, but I totally understand the time commitment issue. I have a full-time career and go to school at night, so I had to scale back my dreams of blogging regularly to make way for a social life and sleep. Good luck to both of you!

21 Joey { 03.31.08 at 7:42 pm }

It’s interesting to read comments from people about how much they’ve enjoyed this blog… as I am definitely in that group. Your work here has been appreciated and I wish you both good luck and success in whatever ventures you take on .

Thank you both, very much.

A community written blog sounds like a good idea!

22 raymond { 03.31.08 at 8:31 pm }

Im bummed because i had this site on my favorites and it was always a daily duty to visit this site, but its always good to go out on top wish you both the best. man i didnt know Ricardo was only 23, I wouldve thought u were over 25 but not 30, by your writing style and the way you express yourself. well Stephen hope you can get a correspondent spot periodically to have your p.o.v

take care, good luck in your future endeveavors.

23 rosslyn { 03.31.08 at 9:01 pm }

crushing. what else will i do when i should be studying?

24 Jared { 03.31.08 at 10:12 pm }

tear

25 haven { 03.31.08 at 10:17 pm }

Rich, Stephen- dont go!, your blog is amazing, by far the best coverage of downtown. I have appreciated all the work you’ve done on this and I know many many many others have too. I think your enthusiasm for downtown has spread to all your readers, and im saddened that it didnt spread to potential advertisers too if that is the case. If advertisers werent willing to get spots on your site, it was just their short sightedness - it would have been great for them. You are the new downtown, and your readers are too. Im still in denial, and if this wasnt intended as april fools, I hope it could turn into an april fools, and you’ll keep on doing the great angelenic.

26 Jennifer { 03.31.08 at 11:09 pm }

NOOO - you can’t go away! I just found your website a week ago and I LOVE it! I check it every day. Good luck with your feature endeavors but please think about coming back full time…..

27 Daysouffle { 04.01.08 at 5:30 am }

Booooooooo!!!!! ;) I love this blog! You’ve both done a great job.

I would be interested in the neighborhood forum for sure. Please keep me posted.

Much luck in the future. Day

28 shawn { 04.01.08 at 6:59 am }

29 Nathan { 04.01.08 at 8:21 am }

good site, bad to lose…community blogsite would be great!

30 Gino Lang { 04.01.08 at 9:05 am }

I’d be up for submitting work to be posted. I’d consider it an honour to write for this site, as it’s been a pleasure reading it and I would like to contribute. I appreciate all you’ve done to provide us with the latest and greatest in this city of ours. Thanks!

31 JEremy R { 04.01.08 at 9:32 am }

I absolutely loved this site. I thank you for all of your very hard work. You have really made a difference and you should be proud of your accomplishments. IMHO, You are better than career journalists on this subject. I hope you stay on yelp, curbed, skyscraper forum, and all the other sights and keep commenting. You can make a difference whether you maintain your own site or not.

I know on yelp, they constantly arrange for impromptu low key meets. I get messaged all the time by ametuer yelpers about events. To a lesser extent, skyscraper forum would have random meetups as well. Maybe having those mixers at new restaurants downtown would be a great way for downtown fans to still share ideas about development and the hood in general.

It takes a ton of time to cover a city of this size, and do it right. I am amazed that you were able to pull together such a wonderful webpage.

good luck, and I will see you on curbed and ssp.

32 tom { 04.01.08 at 10:23 am }

So sorry to hear this. You guys have done an excellent job covering the renaissance, and we all appreciate it.

33 Tom Fool { 04.01.08 at 11:31 am }

Happy April 1st!

34 Dtownla { 04.01.08 at 1:32 pm }

This has to be an April Fools. Please?!? :\

35 Chris { 04.01.08 at 2:08 pm }

Still waiting to hear this is a cruel, cruel, cruel April Fool’s Joke…..

36 Veronica M. { 04.01.08 at 3:13 pm }

Wow, major bummer. Your sit became my #1 place to find out about new restaurants and happenings around downtown. Your coverage was great.

“I actually had a similar idea in mind this morning. Something like a public forum for residents to exchange retail openings, restaurant info, etc - maybe Rich and I could moderate on the back-end. It’s something we’re seriously considering.

How many of you would support that?”

I definitely support this.

37 lastraphanger { 04.01.08 at 3:26 pm }

Very interesting development in the Downtown Blogosphere..

Running a blog is not all it’s cooked up to be; I can tell you that from personal experience. You start out thinking, wow! this’ll be fun! Then it stops being fun and the party’s over.

Then, you’re greatly relieved of a burden and you go on to better, more satisfying things.

Best of luck to you both.

38 Fred Camino { 04.01.08 at 4:23 pm }

Hey lastraphanger, you’re another blogger who disappeared from the scene much to my disappointment! C’mon people, blogging isn’t all that bad!!!!

39 vanessa acuna { 04.01.08 at 4:48 pm }

Somebody please tell me this is an April Fool’s gag :-(

40 Kellie { 04.01.08 at 4:53 pm }

Say it ain’t so, Rich Alossi and Stephen Friday!

Very, very disappointing.

The announcement of putting this blog back to slumber mode wouldn’t be as surprising and as much a letdown if updates to the site had been steadily decreasing over the past few weeks or months. Instead, the pace of keeping your visitors informed actually seemed to have moved up several notches. Angelenic was becoming similar to a downtown-centric version of la.curbed.com.

I hope you guys reconsider your decision, or find others to assist you in keeping your web pages current and active.

41 James Clausen { 04.01.08 at 5:13 pm }

I’d support the public forum type site. It needs to be moderated by someone responsible so that the comments posted would be objective and focus on the developments and events that affect downtown. That’s just my opinion.

42 George { 04.01.08 at 5:35 pm }

Sad to you guys go, I love the restaurant reviews. I just moved to Downtown and this site was great as far as being introduced to the goings on in Downtown. I am just glad you introduced me to Bon Chon, I can’t get enough of it!!

43 Dave Bullock { 04.01.08 at 9:13 pm }

@vanessa acuna wow way to get all spammy with it! =]

i think that everyone on this blog knows about downtown news. thanks though!

44 Don Garza { 04.01.08 at 11:11 pm }

Dave you are a trip, made me laugh!!!!

Don’t forget that latowncrier.com will be doing some great stuff this summer too.

Dance on that grave baby!!!!

I am so over you Steve and Rich. Leave us like the teases that you are.

Just kidding.

on a serious note love ya and you guys can house sit for me in my new mansion

45 LAofAnaheim { 04.02.08 at 12:08 am }

Wow..I use to visit this site at least four or five times a day..and now with no updates since the 28th (I knew something seemed fishy on the 30th), it feels..uh..weird. Going to miss the constant updates. You were my most trusted source in downtown. As mentioned previously, having guest posting would be awesome…I’m sure there are many like us who come across random gems in LA and would love to report it the brilliant way that you two have done.

46 vanessa acuna { 04.02.08 at 9:44 am }

Dave: True, most of you know about Downtown News but nobody knows about all the BIG changes coming to LADN’s website. A future option…

47 emily { 04.02.08 at 4:24 pm }
