debuting vegan eatery offers eclectic soul/mex cuisine
Located just outside of Koreatown on the corner of Pico and Norton, a new veggie-friendly restaurant called Vegan Village Internet Cafe is celebrating its grand opening today.
Positioning itself as an upscale, “mostly organic” Soul/Mexican cafe, Vegan Village offers varied selections such as smoky BBQ tofu dumplings, tostadas, burritos, wheat burgers, falafel sandwiches and vegetarian shrimp po boys.
Other featured meal items include a homemade apple cider-dressed Wakame salad, soy hot wings, the nutmeat chili wrap made with Brazilian nuts, and the “best potato salad this side of the Mississippi.” For dessert, consider something as simple as soy ice cream or jump face first into a freshly-baked sweet potato pie.
Cafe-goers seeking a more loungy laptop experience will appreciate the fresh juices, smoothies and organic decaf coffee available at the bar or in the outdoor gazebo. Also, brunch and a creative selection of breakfast dishes are available every Sunday.
Vegan Village Internet Cafe, whose diverse menu looks to be rivaled only by The Cheesecake Factory, is “poised to be the closest thing to your mother’s kitchen, save the meat,” says Michael Sacca, a representative of the restaurant. For a Louisiana native turned California vegetarian, I would have to agree.
Other like-minded Downtowners seeking to expand their realm of dining options should consider venturing out to this far edge of Koreatown. Free parking is available in the rear.

I hope they can make a go of this. Love the alien monster (with the eggplant head) on their web site.
Lots of small stores around this neighborhood (Fumi’s Fish is a block away and had been in the neighborhood for a decade; Passionfruit, a clothing store, opened a few months ago just a few blocks west.) I just wish all the stores would gather in a herd. Right now, there are bars and autobody shops in between which kill the walkability of the neighborhood.
thanks for the tip!!
Is this the same place that was called “Soul Vegan”?
Brian, I think you’re right – it was called Soul Vegetarian. Not sure how it relates though.
Brian,
I asked the restaurant rep Michael Sacca, here’s his response:
“Soul Vegetarian was run by different managers. Jewel, the property owner, is now taking the reigns as restaurant manager. As i understand Soul Vegetarian has a couple locations across the United States, but we are not affiliated with them at all.
Manuel, the head Chef, worked under Soul Vegetarian, so our menu has similar items, but we’re also introducing a Mexican flavor to the menu with the tostatas and burritos. Also, the service will be much better.”
Thanks man!
I have been showing a couple of my friends this blog post and they seem interested in it. Anyone been?
