parking pay stations now operative on 7th street

City transportation officials have wasted no time implementing new computerized stations to modernize the way you pay for curbside parking Downtown.
First spotted in South Park two weeks ago, the terminals can now be found on all busy blocks of the Financial District and area around LA Live, though most have yet to be activated.
The week, however, fitting the October time line given to us by the Department of Transportation, the first park-and-pay terminals have now taken over 7th and 8th streets near Figueroa.
Bright yellow hoods — eerily reminiscent of guillotine head bags — now cover the old single-space meters, directing parked individuals to use the nearby pay station.
Over 135 more will replace a total of 700 old meters by the end of October.
Daniel Mitchell, Senior Transportation Engineer for LADOT and Pay Program Manager, relays that the old meters will be removed in coming weeks, once the public has had an opportunity to adjust to the new system.
Removal of the meter poles will follow in the next month or so to clean up the streetscape and complete the conversion.

Great to see the modernizataion. Only a couple of thing to say:
- $4 per hour! Geez…it’s like the City makes us want to park in parking garages. The quick pick-up is no more.
- 8 am to 8 pm? Did they really have to increase 2 more hours of metered parking? That sucks!
not to be glib, but i really wonder how many businesses are going to cater to their biking customers who will be losing their parking spaces..
The ability to extend meter hours past 6pm appears to have been part of recent code revisions that changed meter rates. From MC 88.05:
“Provisions of this division which require payment of parking meters located on City streets shall apply at such times and hours as may be determined from time to time by the Department, based upon engineering and traffic investigation. ”
