Downtown Los Angeles Blog

hayward to welcome trendy gallery, clothing boutique

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

Picking up where 43 Styles left off, except with a much stronger concept, a new clothing boutique/art gallery is coming to the corner of 6th and Spring.

As a not-so-subtle nod to the fading stigma of an older Downtown (a trend becoming increasingly popular in these parts), the small shop will be known as Crack Gallery — a place for hip Downtowners to pick up sexy fashions and accessories… and a piece of local pop art.

Eric Shomof of Pacific Investments, the owner of the Hayward Hotel where the retail store is opening alongside two eateries and a yogurt shop, is behind the venture and has brought in two younger ladies with Melrose boutique experience to help run the show.

Shoes, hats, scarves and jewelry can be purchased here in addition to a variety of garments for guys and gals. The exhibited artwork, doubling as decoration for the walls, will be available for sale as well.

Doors are now open and hours are from 10:00am to 6:00pm daily. The boutique’s art component, which includes a small lower-level gallery, will help tie the business into the monthly Art Walk and later hours will be held on those nights.

This is the kind of retail stores we need more of in DTLA! I’m so glad to see a “Melrose Ave” in the making right in the Historic Core. I really believe that the only area of DTLA that can foster a strong retail scene (akin to SoHo or Union Square in SF, or even Old Town Pasadena) is the Historic Core. The reason is because of the contiguous retail space through such a large 3-dimensional area. Linear commercial districts are “Okay,” but 3-D urban areas that allow people to walk in multiple, random directions to stumble upon serendipitous discoveries are always the best kind.

Hopefully, the Jewelry District will slowly become part of that “big picture” as it continues to diversify in its retail offerings away from wholesale jewelry giving way to creative shops and possibly more cultural offerings. That way it’ll meld directly into the Financial District, South Park, Civic Center, etc. making for a truly incredible pedestrian/urban experience akin to other great urban centers. The Historic Core is like the glue that binds all the other districts of Downtown LA together. But the great shops, galleries, restaurants, museums, theaters, etc. need to be there to act as the glue (aka pedestrian linkages).

Besides, isn’t the Museum of Neon Art looking for new space? :) The possibilities are endless in the Historic Core…

This entire corner of 6th and spring is going to be transformed. Almost all the retail stores are being remodeled in that area not to mention the entire lineup of buildings in that area are being renovated.

This area will be a place to be in about 6 months when everything is ready. We finally have a catalyst and an owner that is willing to put money where is mouth is by not only renovating his building, helping his tenants with improvements, but also building out his own retail spaces.

This is the greatest news ever! Seriously, this changes my life! Yesterday I was kind of sad about the horribly depressed economy and our two terrible choices for the presidential election. But then I read about this fabulous shop where I can buy all this great stuff! I just can’t stay sad anymore! Downtown Los Angeles is the greatest place in the whole wide world!

I feel kind of sad about the economy too. I am going to go ahead and feel sorry myself all day and do absolutely nothing about it. Everything from sports, eating, shopping and all life must stop because I am so mature and grown up thinking about the economy and because I am thinking about demand and supply. Now I am going to post this clever post and feel proud of myself.

Not to mention that these people that go all out and take a chance with their money are the very reason there is an economy.

When is that burger bar going to open? I like that window ad. Very creative.

Hey, seriously, you two kids are just A PANIC. Not since Mack and Meyer for Hire have we seen such a hilarious comic duo…are you guys agented?

It is my hope that the new residents of the historic core district understand that they will be as safe here as they would be elsewhere. The present residents (low income) are not all drug addicts. I believe that we can all “get along”. For those who do not wish to “get along” they are doing themselves a cultural injustice. We are as good as any others!
