The newest addition to Chinatown’s growing fashion front, Choose Chinatown, held a low-key soft opening last week in the busy Central Plaza, taking over the empty space recently left by Munky King.
Co-owner Robin Carver of Welcome Hunters explains the boutique will be operating with minimal inventory until the grand opening event set for mid-October.
Until then, a limited selection of tees and hoodies are available on the shop’s galvanized steel pipe racks — some sporting the simple “Choose Chinatown” name, already being sought after by local “it” kids catching on to a neighborhood pride fad.
A full line of sneakers, jeans, and fashion accessories along with benches and interior signage have yet to be brought in.
As previously reported, Choose Chinatown will be a supplier of urban cult labels from all over Europe and Asia, all hand-selected by Carver and her partners Jason Gillis and Raymond Tseng.
Names like Mishka, Cheap Monday, A.P.C. and Tretorn will fill the shelves, making contemporary street wear difficult to find in this city more accessible to the Downtown community.
Tseng, who just relocated his Asian-inspired sneaker shop Lion’s Den to the former Jack Hanley gallery space nearby, will showcase a trendy footwear line from China and limited-edition Nike shoes at Choose Chinatown, among others.
