Shits & Giggles FlyerDowntown’s nightlife options are expanding, diversifying and welcoming those from all walks of life. A couple months ago when we took a step back to acknowledge Downtown’s growing gay population, local supporters expressed a need for social outlets to accommodate this niche demand.

Now, party boys on the weekends looking for some Shits & Giggles have a place to find just that — and the word is out!

DJ Victor Rodriguez (of Beige fame) and Chris Bowen’s new private party for the Downtown gay crowd is making a splash on the underground scene, drawing a cross-section of liberal lofties to the weekly electro-dance bash.

Young fashionable hipsters to more conservative suit-by-day guys can be found here each Friday night, cutting loose to the pumping robo-techno beats or enjoying a drink with like-minded locals.

What: Shits & Giggles
When: Every Friday night

between shits ‘n giggles and moutache mondays, downtown is emerging as the funkier, more progressive sibling of what has typically been considered the “eastiside”, silverlake.

with so many silverlake gay bars having been revamped into, shall we say “more inclusive” establishments as of late, it’s really exciting to see something that’s not just carbon copies of those places emerge.

bravo to the promoters of both places for being so forward-thinking and creating something new and exciting. here’s to hoping it lasts and grows.

come on, victor. why so secretive? myspace? not on it. is anyone on myspace any more? tell me where the hell it is and i’ll come, unless it’s just full of tweakers with 600 friends on myspace each.

… a guy on curbed said it was in the higgins gallery. anyone know if that’s true?

4 Stephen Friday { 04.15.08 at 12:31 pm }

Yes and no, it’s been there before, but it stays pending. It was located closer to Skid Row last weekend and will most likely be in a new location this week. Email or Myspace Victor for details.

Could this finally….finally be the end of WeHo’s monopoly on gay nightlife? Silver Lake had the potential but it got way too old and “bear-ish”. In the 2nd largest city in the US there should be an alternative to Santa Monica Blvd and all the mainstream gays and music you’re likely to find there.

Moustache Monday’s is a blast, BTW.

519 S. Spring Street is one of the locations.

Hi guys - we’re not trying to be secretive it’s just that the location changes too often to list a permanent venue - we don’t prefer myspace and actually prefer that you email us at our yahoo account. That way, when we send out our weekly email info you’ll automatically receive the address, drink specials, performances, CD promos etc… Nothing shady or elitist just what we’re dealing with until we get a permanent place to call home. Once that happens there will be no more emailing - just come and have fun. By the way we will not be on Spring street this Friday.
Much peace and love, Chris

chris - if you are not trying to be secretive, then why don’t you tell us now where it’s gonna be this friday?

9 chris { 04.15.08 at 8:52 pm }

I have a 5pm meeting tomorrow - have to confirm with the owners -will know for sure then - don’t want to send anyone to the wrong place. We’re doing our best you guys! :)

10 Stephen Friday { 04.15.08 at 10:34 pm }

ksep, DJ Vic told me last Friday they didn’t have the venue lined up until late that afternoon of the same day. I think what guys typically do is just show up at the Spring street location, then if it’s being held somewhere else, you’ll get directions there.

Chris, thanks for the explanation—I’m a little turned off by private & exclusivity, though there is a thrill in knowing about something that not a lot of people do. I would definitely like to support it and good luck to you!

12 Chris { 04.16.08 at 10:15 am }

Hey guys - while we’re on the subject of this, does anyone have any tips on a great Friday night permanent spot downtown for us? We know of Charlie O’s and Crash Mansion but we really want to offer something in a place that’s different and original. If any of you guys have any leads for a cool spot we’d really appreciate it.

13 Stephen Friday { 04.16.08 at 10:39 am }

Chris, if you’re serious about locating a permanent spot to host Shits & Giggles, I’ll be first in line to help.

I can even write a new post with the intention of eliciting ideas and suggestions.

How about The Edison? That venue is swank and gay friendly. They event tried to get a gay night called Current off the ground last year, but it was poorly advertised. I could put you in touch with the right people there if you’re interested.

14 Shawn { 04.16.08 at 10:39 am }

Have you considered the old “Soul Folks Cafe” location at 613 Imperial St — a few blocks east of Alameda just east of the 6th Street bridge)? The owner is Yaleng Smith. I think you can find her contact info on either myspace or google.

15 Stephen Friday { 04.16.08 at 10:46 am }

If I had to toss out some other possible venues around Downtown:

-Blue Velvet (City West, hip and contemporary restaurant/lounge)
-Bar 107 (Historic Core, used to be gay)
-Far Bar (Little Tokyo, very cool space)
-Club 740 (on Broadway underground, I think there is some gay event trying to get off the ground there now)

16 Chris { 04.16.08 at 11:02 am }

OMG I love you guys!!! Victor and I will get on it!

17 buzz { 04.16.08 at 6:20 pm }

Isn’t the O Hotel on Flower readying a nightclub space in their basement? Haven’t seen it but the lounge upstairs seems to be doing well nights.

18 loveandhatela { 04.16.08 at 6:26 pm }

yeah BAR 107 at 107 w. 4th street (near main street) use to be a gay latino bar called SCORE, was very small. I went with a friend “way back” in 2002:)
It was similar in size to clubchico.com in montebello (8 miles south east of downtown los angeles, which is also a gay latino bar.

I just wanted to say having gone to S&G the last two weeks, the atmosphere is amazing, the music is some of the best I’ve heard in a long time and the vibe is oh so un-Weho…..I Love it! I hope all of us downtowners and everyone else help support it since we have no other place like it in downtown. Hope to see all you there on Friday!

23 Barbie Q { 04.17.08 at 10:53 am }

Hello fellas, Q here just saying a big THANK YOU to the props and good vibes on this blog. I have been doing these for many years (with a break in between) and have found that downtown LA has become one of the most REAL spots I have ever seen. Hosting at Moustache and working with the S&G family, I have seen so many different kinds of clicks (punks, leathermen, fashionistas, twinks, bearded men, queens, hip-hoppers, you name it) come together for one night and dance and have a great time together.

Silverlake and Weho have their place no denying, BUT there is a new sheriff in town and we are welcoming all, not just a selected few. That’s he difference you hear?!

Thanks again and looking forward to seeing anyone and all of you there Friday night. Leave the attitude at home and come for the good times!! Smooches.

24 New way to be gay? { 04.17.08 at 10:56 am }

How about the former El Camino Real restaurant in the basement of the Eastern Columbia. In the first part of the 2000’s, there used to be a trance afterhours there every Friday night/Saturday morning called Red. (Red still happens as an 21+ afterhours from 3am-7am at 740 Broadway, btw). Anyway, I think the space is sitting empty since KOR renovated the building. They might give you guys a deal since no one else is doing anything with the space (and there are plenty of gays who already live in the Eastern Columbia).

25 Chris { 04.17.08 at 12:31 pm }

I really appreciate you guys’ help - this blog is a goldmine of resources for us. Victor and I are going to troll around to all the places you guys have mentioned tonight and check them out. Can’t wait for tomorrow!

26 chris { 04.22.08 at 9:30 pm }

Hey guys - we just wanted to say thanks to everyone who came out last Friday and want to invite all of you guys to come down and celebrate our first night at our new space - we’ll be in the upstairs ballroom of Club 740 at 740 South Broadway - enter through the back alley - parking at 8th and Spring - It’s an absoutley gorgeous venue - no need to RSVP anymore since it looks like this could be a permanent spot for us -just come and have fun! 10pm-2am - free before 10:30pm and $2 vodka drinks til 11pm - plus a show or two!

27 Brian { 04.23.08 at 2:06 am }

Hey Promoters, I’m interested in having a Fund Raising Event at your site. Me along with a great friend have teamed up together to raise money for AIDS Project Los Angeles part of the (National AIDS Marathon Training Program). This year we are running the Amsterdam Marathon on October 19, 2008. We have committed ourselves to running the 26.2 miles and have a huge challenge to raise at least $9,000 to help fight the battle of HIV/AIDS. Could we possible have an event at your place?
