johnnie’s new york pizzeria opens at cal plaza
This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.
While to some it may seem like Kahala Corp. is taking over Downtown with their 13 pleasant if uninspired restaurant and dessert store concepts (including Cold Stone Creamery, Samurai Sam’s, Great Steak & Potato and Surf City Squeeze), sometimes a location just doesn’t work out — even for a multinational corporation.
So what do you do when one of your concepts is a flop? You switch it out with another one, of course.
Such is the case with Taco Time, Kahala’s quick-service Mexican restaurant at the Water Court at Cal Plaza, which has been replaced with Johnnie’s New York Pizzeria, opening this past Monday.
In fact, when calling the phone number of record for Taco Time, an employee answered, “Johnnie’s Pizza!” Let’s hope switching out the concepts involved more than replacing a cactus with a New York subway map.
The pizza chain has been marching its way across Southern California for some time now, and its newest location on Bunker Hill joins a location at 505 Flower, which has been open for nearly three years.
Fast-casual food including salads, pasta, calzones, sandwiches and, yes, pizza are offered.
Thanks to reader Sonia for the tip. Got one of your own? Let us know!
What’s your favorite Kahala concept?

that place is always empty
this place is a chain…woooof
I bet Palin would eat here.
westbrook: I was craving pizza so I went there today. The line was out the door almost to the fountain. Decided on CPK instead.
I’m pretty sure it’s the same Johnnie’s Pizza that used to be in the Wall Street Deli directly across the fountain. Wall Street Deli closed under bizarre circumstances (doors were locked one morning and it never re-opened). It’s good pizza, and esepcially needed in that spot. Taco Time was disgusting. We already have Mendocino, will soon have Casa, and the sushi place that used to be Ric’s. Where am I supposed to eat when I only have $2.50 and 15 minutes for lunch? Johnnie’s, that’s where.

Taco Time sucked. And even though this is a chain owned by the same company, Johnnie’s is actually pretty good! Don’t knock it till you try it yo.
Why would they put another one so close to the 505 Flower location?
Taco Time, disgusting. Johnnie’s, not bad.
