Between Bunker Hill’s Casa and South Park’s Rivera, Downtown will be hit hard this year with modern Latin cuisine and the retro-edgy style that accompanies it.

Since construction began in July, the large restaurant space underneath Two California Plaza has taken on a new shape — or more accurately, several shapes. Curvaceous booths and half-walls, some almost pod-like, fill the patio and main room of Casa that give it the flair of a Jetsons living room.

The restaurant will be quick-service during the day to cope with the usual lunch frenzy, reverting to full-service mode during planned evening and weekend hours.

By way of Eater LA, we know that Mario Del Pero of nearby Mendocino Farms is behind the venture, relying on ex-Blue Velvet head chef Kris Morningstar to preside over the kitchen. Ana Henton, who many Downtowners will know from underground-cafeteria Lemonade, is the mastermind behind Casa’s whimsy concept.

Wow! I love it. It’s different from your average design in Downtown. I think this’ll do well.

Stephen/Rich:

I know it isn’t that difficult for readers to look up address for ourselves but I think it would be very useful for address to be available on places whenever you are to write about them. It makes it really easy to just look up where the place is to get a feel for the area.

^You’re right, and we also include address info when it’s a new restaurant/retail opening or event that people can attend. In this case I thought stating California Plaza was sufficient since it’s just construction update - but it’s 3rd & Grand, in Cal Plaza, adjacent to the Water Court.

look out for the sueno room in this restaurant. a circular room with a starlike ceiling and filled with pillows for large parties. it was still in the plans when i got a quick look-see when i still worked at mendo. i thought it looked awesome. so happy for mario and that it ‘s coming together so well!
