coles opens november 16, restoring cross-town rivalry 2798639324_f51530e73d_m downtown los angelesCole’s PE Buffet, the 1908 restaurant undergoing a renovation by barman Cedd Moses of 213 Ventures, is set to open its doors once again on November 16, Metromix reports.

The opening comes just in time to celebrate 100 years in Downtown — as uptown rival Philippe’s did earlier this week — even though the restaurant and bar has spent most of the past year under construction in the ground floor of the Pacific Electric Lofts.

Last month blogdowntown reported that Cole’s signage has been relit; the new lighting is still being tested.

In the kitchen, Cole’s new chef Neal Fraser, previously of Grace and BLD, will be tackling the French dip phenom head-on.  Eater LA has an in-depth interview with Fraser on what he plans for the menu, which will be a more gourmet version of the sandwich using high-quality ingredients.

While 213 Ventures has remained tight-lipped on Cole’s, the super-secret rumor on the street is that the venue will have a soft opening later this month.  Company representatives had not responded to inquiries by the time this post was published in order to confirm or deny the rumor.

Luckily, the author of this post lives directly across the street from Cole’s and is keeping an eagle-eye watch over the space.  We’ll keep you posted.

I’m going to be there every night eating french dips and getting drunk. That’s a promise.

Rumor has it they are closing the street on their big opening? Anyone know when or if it’s true?

I can’t wait!

Wonderful…another Cedd Moses venture. Hope you lofties don’t choke on yer ‘gourmet’ sandwich!

Erm…what exactly is the problem with Cedd? I’ve been to all of his establishments and enjoyed them, though I wouldn’t say I was a regular customer. Okay, he owns a lot of places. Success breeds expansion. What’s the complaint? Is he getting people too drunk for your taste?

And I probably will remember to chew my sandwich well, so, I won’t be choking. But thanks for the “concern.”

Does anyone know what the name of the bar next to Cole’s will be called?? The one with the huge black door on the right??

Cedd and 213 Ventures has saved and repurposed many historic buildings in Downtown by converting them back to living venues. He is dedicated to maintaining the character of the original architecture, when possible, while integrating any newly added features into the existing decor. Many people may not always agree with him, but if his organization hadn’t saved some of these Downtown gems they may have remained vacant, graffitied eye sores, or worse yet torn down ages ago.

“…I didn’t have access to the Cole’s recipes, but to me it’s all about technique… ” Hmmm, don’t know about that. You can always slap some chili on a burger, but there’s only one Tommy’s flavor. I’m hoping for the best and eagerly awaiting the reopening.

As a long time Coles diner I just hope that at least some of the menu like there Meatloaf and of course their dips will return. Also will Cedd and 213 Ventures turn our neighborhood favorite lunch spot into an upscale eatery? Lets all hope that we have a little of both. Can we have reasonable prices with a good old Coles fair in a quality restaurant with some of the ambiance of the old Coles?
