blue velvet hosting downtown’s newest gay night
Forget a pot of gold, these days the only thing you’ll find at the end of a rainbow is Downtown Los Angeles.
Since the beginning of the year, three nights have been pegged here for recurring gay-friendly events, making Downtown one of the most popular social spots for those seeking an alternative to the West Hollywood scene.
Now that could all be challenged with the arrival of Babes, a new gay lounge put on by nightlife publication Odyssey Magazine Wednesday nights at City West’s Blue Velvet.
Endorsed by a parade of gay-culture icons and trio of deejays, Babes is hitting Downtown hard with Hollywood-heavy pitches and hype — pushing VIP registrations, synchronized-swimming in the restaurant’s patio pool, and an appearance by Alexis Arquette.
That was enough to hook a mob of boys (most traveling from the other side of town instead of the other side of the 110) to show up for the October 8 premiere, all pleasantly surprised by Blue Velvet’s trendy space and skyline backdrop.
But will it be enough to keep the crowd coming back week after week? Stop by October 15 to find out.

Ok, so:
1) Mustache Mondays (Mondays) @ La Cita
2) Babes (Wednesdays) @ Blue Velvet
3) Shits n Giggles (Fridays) @ 740 B’way
4) Hideaway (every other Saturday) @ T Base
That’s a full week of gay fun. Am I missing some other clubs?
If you had to make an educated guess…what would you say is the gay population of DTLA now? I know it’s increasing from my own, very non-scientific, viewpoint of seeing more and more gay guys @ Golds downtown over the last 4 years.
There are talks of a boys’ night on Sundays at the Bonaventure Brewery. I don’t know much about that though.
Hope the music isn’t all “circuit” sounding. Otherwise wouldn’t mind checking the location out.
Is this still going on? The fliers on the website only advertise Oct 8th.
I wonder why they stopped hosting this event. Was City West too far away for the gays ?
We’ve lost Babes & Hideaway. When do we get a bar?!
I think we should take over CorkBar for a night a week or whenever when it opens which should be soon. Great space and perfect location.
I vote for the association. Its already heavy gay most of the time anyway.
