jewish residents invited to celebrate sukkot this week

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

Following the High Holy Days, the Jewish holiday of Sukkot is upon us and can be celebrated Downtown, thanks to the Downtown Jewish Community Center.

The DJCC will be erecting a tent (or “sukkah”) for the Sukkot celebration in the Joe’s Auto Park at 437 South Hill Street (adjacent to the Title Guarantee Lofts) for Downtown residents of the Jewish faith. The celebration is slated to last from Thursday, October 16 to Monday, October 20.

According to the precepts of Sukkot, Jews are instructed to build a tent-like structure where they will eat, sleep, pray and entertain for the duration of the holiday. The days-long holiday memorializes the forty years Jews spent wandering in the desert living in temporary structures.

Festivities advertised included a lunch pizza and sushi party (presumably kosher) on Thursday between 12:00pm and 2:00pm. For more information call 213-488-1543.
