aeg plans huge 28-day holiday extravaganza for la live
This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.
It’s already mid-October, and most Downtown residents (if not people from all over Los Angeles) are waiting with bated breath for the paramount arrival of LA Live this fall.
With billions of dollars being poured into this six-block area of South Park, a lot of expectations are on the shoulders of developer AEG who is positioning the entertainment complex as Southern California’s new home of live performances and events of all kinds.
To show just how serious they are about this claim, and to celebrate years of planning and public-private collaboration to make this all a reality, AEG has announced plans to hold a month-long holiday celebration to kick off the arrival of LA Live — an event being presented as a gift to the city that will also become a new annual Downtown tradition.
Beginning December 4, The Light of the Angels — a massive multi-media and music display planned at Nokia Plaza — will “combine lights, video creations, live performances and never-before-seen special effects” to create the show.
The seven-minute, highly-orchestrated demonstration is scheduled to run from December 4 to December 31, four times each night at 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 and 10:00pm.
In the center of it all, a 52-foot, 37,500-pound Christmas tree covered with 11,000 LED lights will anchor the plaza, and is claimed to be the only 360-degree light source in the world.
Also planned throughout South Park, are ten-foot tall LED angels to be mounted on light poles, in addition to more than 150 trees draped with LED “snowfall” lights to create a dramatic entrance to the complex.
AEG promises to make it the “most colorful, creative and entertaining destination for holiday lights and decor in southern California.”

Wow.
now seriously i dont know what to say anymore. anyone that still has doubts that the ball is now rolling on downtown become the center of the county really needs to re-evaluate.
My biggest question is whether or not there will be some sort of New Years Eve tradition starting like the ball drop in NYC. Will this year be the first?
“the only 360-degree light source in the world”
How do they figure?
^Good question Paul. I’m not sure either, I think most light bulbs should fit that criteria.
so much LED
i love it!
wooohooo…..now i truly love living in the South Group Condos.
I was feeling meh about LA Live but I’m a big enough woman to admit I was wrong. This is really fantastic.
Very nice, but too bad there’s no retail there. It would be a great place to see the show and then do Christmas shopping.
I wonder if the parking structure will be open by then?
I can’t wait for the festivities to begin!!!
Super Nice:)
The Parking lots are open
Per chance there is outdoor skating?
I hope the month-long holiday celebration will culminate with a annual new years eve celebration…after all, LA Live is supposed to be “The Times Square of the West”, right???!…now is their chance to prove it!
Southpark - “the westside of downtown”…so great to see the continued change and outlook on downtown…
NOT the time square of the west. Its los angeles, Times Square is the Los Angeles of the east…
eh? ehhhhhhh?
CAN’T WAIT!
NYE event wound not happen this year, they are talking about something next year.
It is so purple… It looks like the Lakers vomited on LA Live!
I think i see anessa in that picture
Well, this is definitely a good start to LA Live making its intro onto the global stage. If the area around LA Live starts to really infill with other high quality mixed-use projects—like LA Central and “Jardin”—then DTLA really has a bright future at becoming the true urban center of a city lost without an identity for way too long.
How about doing this in the public right-of-way instead, like most all other cities do?
Oooh, love the lights. Can we have a special holiday Hideaway event here?
Hopefully the supporters will be out there at LA Live on a consistent enough basis to show what Downtown is capable of and perhaps get some of the other projects like LA Central, Grand Ave, Park Fifth, etc…… off the ground.
Now that we have some momentum going I hope that we can keep it rolling.
its all gonna take place in such a small area (1 acre roughly) I really hope they can pull it all off maybe they can use 11th street for the big crowds in the future also I am definitely looking forward to seeing the trees all along Fig and Olympic lit up and covered with snowfall lighting they should keep that up year round. Gooo LA!!
i hope there will be bike racks!
when does the festivus begin?! what are the events?
where are these 150 trees draped in LED lights? i was driving around and couldnt find them anywhere. I know they haven’t been lighted yet but i don’t see that many trees ready to be lighted up.
#26: The trees are on Figueroa between 12th and Olympic, along Chick Hearn Court and in the Nokia Plaza. I can attest that they are in fact lighted.
