what’s to happen to parker center?
With construction rising quickly at First and Main on the replacement LAPD headquarters building, I’ve been wondering what will become of LAPD’s current home, Parker Center.
Parker Center is an interesting building, and whatever you think of the architecture or how it helps or hinders community involvement in the policing process, it’s an important location, and Downtowners have no idea what will become of the site once the new building opens in 2010.
Will it be demolished? Refurbished? Will another government agency move into the space once LAPD moves out? Considering the new neighbors — a brand-new women’s prison facility under construction on the same block — I don’t think it’s a prime location for private commercial space.
Another question I have is whether the new building will consolidate various LAPD divisions. Currently LAPD’s Internal Affairs Division is the main tenant of the Bradbury Building.

I was told by a police Sergeant yesterday that Parker Center would be torn down.
I don’t know if all the various offices would be consolidated, but it would not make sense to build a new building if that was not the goal.
I worked at Parker Center from 1970-79. I was in the earthquake of 71 and there was damage to the buildings. Sheets of glass sailed down to the parking lot and as much as I love that building and all the people I worked with, it is well-overdue for a makeover for safety sake. It will be torn down. They already have the number of square foot calculated that will be built on the site, but no decision has been made as to which government entitites will be housed in the building.
