safari sam’s brings all-ages events to historic core theater

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

Downtown LA’s sidewalks are growing a little livelier these days, even more so now that Safari Sam’s, an all-ages restaurant, club and music venue has relocated to the Historic Core’s Regent Theatre from Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood after losing their lease.

Landing a midsized operator for the Regent is a score for owner Tom Gilmore, who last year applied for an alcohol permit for the 689-seat venue with plans for a restaurant, bar, lounge, dance floor and live performance space.

Among the first groups to play in the new Safari Sam’s space was Sunn O))), who scrambled at the last minute to notify ticketholders of the venue change.

Groups representing hip hop, indie rock, acoustic and contemporary genres will be showing Downtown in the future. Previously purchased tickets for all events will be honored at the new venue, located on Main Street north of 5th.

Great news! Alot of great bands have played at Sams but the venue was a little awkward. I actually got to see the Regent at this past art walk and its gritty and wonderful at the same time.

I just love not having to drive to Hollywood anymore :)

Safari Sam’s was a great spot. I hope they can keep it up and make it even better downtown. I had many wild nights at Sams, looking forward to even more now.

That’s great news! A friend and I were lamenting the state of the Regent during one of the recent downtown Art Walks. Sad that a great theater had gotten so run down. It looked better during the October Art Walk, thankfully, but I’m hoping this latest announcement will really help to revitalize the Regent!

Wow, you guys are fast. I referred (Safari) Sam and Amber to Gilmore just a few days before the Art Walk, and they made a deal, like, today.

For those of you who don’t know Amber, she used to run one of the first galleries on Spring Street: The Lab. It was at 835 S. Spring about 7-8 years ago. She is one of the early inspirations for Gallery Row, and is no stranger to Downtown.

Awesome! I used to go to Safari Sam’s all the time like 2 summers ago. Tuesday nights was where it was at!
