doomie’s home (vegan) cookin’ opens in chinatown
This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.
LA vegans and vegetarians take note: Doomie’s Home Cookin’ opened this past Saturday at Spring and Ord streets in Chinatown.
With a home-style menu that’s fully veganizable (be sure to specify vegan or vegetarian if you’re choosy), Doomie’s strikes a nice balance between the nearby Spring Street Smokehouse (not vegan) and other veggie restaurants that may leave a hungry diner wanting more.
“We are not one of the new veggie restaurants you’ve come to know, we are the old comfort foods you long to remember,” states the restaurant’s MySpace page.
Pulled-“pork” sandwiches, mac & cheese, fried “chicken,” vegan Jell-O and other nostalgia-inducing meals means that statement isn’t too far-fetched for non-meat-eaters longing for some of the good stuff. To Live and Eat in LA and quarrygirl are already on top of things with solid reviews.
As always, call ahead to confirm hours.

As someone who has in the past year or so developed very serious lactose intolerance (and regularly whines about it—IT SUCKS!), I’ve been wondering what kind of local vegan spots there are where I can eat food that tastes like cheese but that isn’t actually. I’ll have to give this place a shot.
FINALLY!!! Good Veggie eatin in Downtown. Hopefully it will live up to expectations.
Thanks for sharing my review! For real, it was all that and more. I’m sitting here drooling again just looking at my own photos of this food… good stuff I tell ya!
I was there yesterday at 4pm - to be honest, I didn’t realize that the place was veggie until my g/f told me after I’d eaten half my mac and cheese. this place is great.
I saw this post this morning and decided to try it for lunch today. I didn’t know what to expect from LA vegetarian food because I’ve only seen places in the Bay Area. I must say that even though they just opened and seemed to still be finding their feet, the food was very good! I had the chili cheese dog and my coworker had the grilled chicken burger. Both were delicious. My only complaint was that the honeydew slices they gave us weren’t very ripe/sweet…but eh, that wasn’t a big deal. The chef (I’m assuming that’s who he was) seemed a little bit unsure of himself, but was extremely friendly and asked us what we thought of the food. I would definitely come back. I will also probably try to trick some coworkers into coming…and then once they declare how good the food is I’ll tell them it’s vegetarian (surprise!).
Went there last night with a vegan friend. We were the only people there. The food took about 4o minutes to come out for our to-go order. While waiting, we took in the decor of Roberto’s Club (the venue in which Doomie’s is located). It left A LOT to be desired, but at least the food was good! We ordered the pulled “pork” sandwich w/onion rings, the “chili cheese dog” with french fries, and a side of mac n cheese. The pulled pork sandwich tasted very authentic, the onion rings were tasty and fresh, and the chili cheese dog was really good as well. The mac n cheese was ok, but definitely could have used some more salt. The french fries were so-so. All in all the food was good but the place could be SO much more. They need a decor overhaul and some good PR.
