staples center’s solar energy installation nearly complete
On Tuesday, Solar Power Inc. finished installing a 24,190-square-foot solar energy array on the roof of the AEG-owned Staples Center, with a ceremony marked by Governor Schwarzenegger’s placing the final panel.
Once the company flips the switch, the installation will produce 345kW of energy per day — which is enough to meet about 5% of the facility’s needs, according to blogdowntown.
A second, 167kw installation on the roof of the Nokia Theatre at LA Live began October 14th.
California has set a target of reaching 30% of our energy consumption from renewable sources by 2020, a goal that cannot be met without the help of “big roof” facilities such as Staples Center and the Nokia Theatre.

Canceling out any improvements that solar might have, Staples is going to install animated digital billboards that will consume the equivalent electricity of 175 residential homes.

Yes, David, but the fact that light attracts people at night will be an incredibly important role that LA Live will play in Downtown for the years to come in attracting NOT ONLY visitors but more residents.
More residents living in Downtown LA mean less people living in energy inefficient suburban tract homes elsewhere and driving a lot less because more and more amenities (like LA Live) will be a short brisk walk away.
The amount of further investment LA Live will continue to attract will more than offset the “175 residential homes” you claim. LA Live’s light and glamor will help centralize more and more businesses and residents into the hub of our transit system.
So stop being such a wrench and go fight another battle.
What? You couldn’t get a current picture with the solar panels on the roof?
That’s cool with the solar and all but I always thought the staples center had a signature roof. They always film it from above. Now there going to film the roof and you will see solar panels if I’m not mistaken.
^ If you live on an upper floor at Luma, I’d love to visit you and take a photo from your balcony!
@seb
and? Is there something wrong with showing the world that you’re demanding renewable energy and that solar panels are actually considered cool now by their very clean nature?
David…..you people seriously need to get a life; you want Los Angeles to have absolutely no charactor in nightlife. Doing so will actually make people shy AWAY from Downtown, not draw them IN at night. I’ve not met one person(NOT ONE) in Downtown who hates the billboards, regardless if they’re digital or not.
Do your homework on the backround of LED’s next time before you deliberately try to convince people that Los Angeles is not the place for advertisements….:

It’s probably best to ignore David, people….
David is probably one of the LONE loudmouths out there, loud enough to be picked up by the LA Times unfortunately. But then again, you have assholes like Joel Kotkin running around claiming global warming isn’t influenced by man. Loonies will always exist on this planet.
You can’t have a vibrant world class Downtown without having an LED-wrapped Entertainment District ……
