union bagel’s 6th street location starts baking next week

This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.

union bagel replaces the toaster on 6th street 2798545196_f81b84f467_m downtown los angelesUnion Bagel, a small coffee shop and bakery based in the Union Station terminal, will be opening its second location, a small storefront on 6th Street, on Wednesday, November 12.

The shop replaces the Toaster, a sandwich shop in the ground floor of the Heron Building, which currently has several empty retail spaces available for lease.

Despite the obvious lack of bagels Downtown — LA is more of a coffee-cake and scone type of city — Union Bagel sits one block over from Arda’s Cafe and their range of options from Brooklyn Bagel Bakery.

Bill…do you know where to find good boil & bake bagels near here?

Eons ago, Rich or Stephen mentioned a bagel place they like to go to, but I couldn’t find that post again & I’m still searching for a good bagel & bialy place.

LA Lola: Brooklyn Bagel Bakery on Beverly near Alvarado. Hands-down, my favorite place.

A little closer to home, Arda’s Cafe sells their bagels.

i’m from nyc, les, and to answer your question there’s nowhere to get good bagels outside of nyc. i find it laughable that places even try. union bagel should be shuttered immediately. stick to what you’re best at LA! put a 99 cent store there.

Ahh, thanks, I’ll check it out!

Bagels are bagels in my opinion. I could think of about 100 other things I’d rather eat for breakfast than bagels. I do eat them though from time to time, but they are like the most unhealthy thing for you. Funny, how people from NJ/NY complain about everything. The food they take for granted is so bad for you, that’s what I find truly laughable. That’s why there are a lot more obese people in NJ/NY than LA.

Actually there are far plenty other breakfast foods worse for you then bagels.
The good: This food is low in Saturated Fat, and very low in Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Thiamin, Folate, Iron and Selenium.
Taking it easy on the cream cheese is key too.

All the bitter ex-New Yorkers: there’s daily non-stop flights, please go! Go eat your bagels on that other coast. Of course, I’d be bitter if I lived there and had to eat their Mexican food. Eesh!

Exactly the point.

Pizza and bagels are miserable in Los Angeles, but try getting a Taco de Lengua in Manhattan. Can’t be done.

Anyway, I’m from (near) New York, and Union Bagels are not that bad. They are worlds better than supermarket bagels (lousy) and almost as good as anything you would get in New York. Brooklyn Bagel’s product are also pretty good. So stop your whining.

I’m not from New York but I do like bagels and I can’t really taste the difference. I was in Vicente Foods on Moday and a guy was selling Jamaican Flavored Bagels call “Jamagel”. After listening to his 20 second pitch, I ended up buying 2 of his individual bagels that had papaya fruit in one and raisin and cinnamon in the other.

The Bagels were very good. I would go back and buy more.

Well, if you like 7-11 food, you’ll love Jamagel’s Bagels. Compared to that place, Union Bagel’s pretty darn good!
