This blog has moved to Twitter! Check out my twitter feed for the latest restaurant, retail, and cultural news in the neighborhood.
As an election-day reminder, today’s results are being shown at the old Farmers and Merchants Bank lobby at 4th and Main, with food provided by Rocket Pizza. Results shown from 6:00pm until midnight at least.
Up Main Street, election results shown all day long on the big screen at the ImaginAsian Center, presented by Downtown Independent. 251 S Main Street
Also, this newlywed is going to be at the northeast corner of 6th and Olive proudly holding a No on 8 poster for the next several hours. I have a couple posters to share, but not too many. Please feel free to join me if you can!
But most importantly, get to your polling place with enough time to vote!

So you got married already?
Keep up the good work Rich! honked for you out there :)
Thanks! My arms are sore as all hell…
Lots of thumbs-up, honks, and thank-yous from the good people of Downtown.
Unfortunately, I’m a bit discouraged by the number of “F*CK YOUs,” thumbs-down, head shakes, and how many people yelled “FAGGOT!” at me while speeding away in their cars.
I swear, it’s a good thing the “UPS driver” demographic doesn’t number larger than it is…. every single one of them flipped me off or showed thumbs-down. I guess that solves the question of UPS vs. FedEx for me.
I’m also discouraged by the large number of Latino, Black and Asian voters that are for Prop 8.
Don’t be discouraged Rich. But it is a sad reality that its still socially acceptable to show your hate for Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender people and fat people. We must change all that.
I am a proud Latino male who is gay.
People have to remember that this is one of only a few countries in the world that provides you with the OPPORTUNITY for liberty and freedom.
We must never forget that.
And Rich thanks for everything that you do, I sincerely appreciate it.
Don’t get discouraged.
It truly is alarming, just from hearing the coworkers in my office, how people are voting.
I’m hoping for the best, but won’t be surprised if the worst occurs (as it did on 2000.) Just because the majority wants it, doesn’t make it right.
free pizza?!
No, no - currency is still required as payment for pizza and beer. Though $2 pizza an beer at ImaginAsian Center is hard to beat…
oh cool place to vote with pizza aweosme
I don’t know you, but congrats on the marriage.
I’m straight, but I think it’s just horrible to vote ‘yes’ on 8. If you don’t believe in gay marriage, fine, but don’t take it away from other people who do. It makes no sense that two people of the same sex getting married lessens the meaning of marriage. Marriage is about love and devotion.
It also saddens me that people will vote ‘yes’ because the decision doesn’t affect them.
Good work Rich. I’m proud of your effort and persistence for the No on 8 campaign. Don’t get discouraged as you have a huge support pool behind you. Congratulations on your marriage as well!
Congratulations on getting hitched, Rich!
I may go out to Imaginasian if the news on Prop 8 isn’t good and I need to get drunk fast. :-)
I voted No on 8! Obama rocked it! Great day for America!!
Rich, I’m sorry you experienced such hateful language and behavior out there. We have to teach tolerance and acceptance and an Obama presidency is a step in that direction.
Hooray for democray and progress!!
Obama Won!!!!!
Check this page on cnn for updates on prop 8 exit polls - http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/ballot.measures/
obama won 97% of the black vote… its sad that so many people voted for someone based on his color alone. If McCain got 97% of the white vote, people would be screaming racism. Its a double standard.
Time to move on, John. Obama’s the President-elect. The US is finally ready to get back to work.
i hope the country is ready to get back to work because i dont want to be giving my hard earned money to some one who doesnt want to work hard for their own money( through this redistribution plan obama has).
John, the sink or swim mentality of the Republicans is over for now. We need a safety net for those who fall thru the cracks…like children and the mentally ill. Compassion is back and $700 Billion senseless wars are out. Figure it out…The money spent on Iraq is coming out of your pocket. Better to spend it on infrastucture in the USA!
So Rich, how does it feel to have 5,000,000 Californians annul your marriage for you?
My blood is boiling. I look back at all the hate-filled glares from Yes on 8ers, and it pisses me off. LA County in particular let me down - I thought for sure it wouldn’t pass here. I was wrong.
No on 8 ran a shit campaign and didn’t drive a narrative. The diversionary tactics of Yes on 8 and their “education” campaign using schoolchildren as bait won out.
It always struck me as wrong that it takes a 67% vote to raise a tax but only 50% +1 to take away someone’s rights. Those are some pretty f-ed up priorities. The silver lining is that Prop 22 passed with about 61% of the vote yet Prop 8 got only 52%. We will get there. Just not this year
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to return to my seat in the back of the bus.
I’m straight and was gonna vote Yes on 8, but slept on it and changed my mind. The No on 8 campaign did a horrible job of explaining the situation to people like me who honestly rarely think about gay rights or gay marriage. And all of those ads from the teachers union after the Yes on 8 people said that it was about children couldn’t have helped.
Is there a next step, like a re-revision of the state constitution or was this it?
This is going to sound horrible but next time a Mormon knocks on my door they’ll be met with a Wrath of Anger. LOL!
I agree with Mark Basaha. A little late now but I wonder if we can get that changed, at least for the future (67% vs. 50%) And Shawn is enlightening. We No-on-8ers get carried away within ourselves, and we tend to be too polite. We were ATTACKED on our home turf, by zealots who mostly came from out of state. We gathered on some steps & waved signs & yelled & chanted. Some cars came by and honked, but if you looked closely in those cars, there were No-on-8ers in them—preachin’ to the choir. How do we bring our message to straight voters who don’t give us a second thought? Next time we need focus groups with people like Shawn there.
As a straight African American female while I was elated to see Obama win (not only, as John suggested, because he was black, but because he was QUALIFIED!) but so saddened to see prop 8 pass. Its was VERY disappointing. I was also sad to see that no on 8 didn’t target the African American or Latino community, which turned up in huge numbers to vote. I think those votes, who tend to sway traditional marriages, could have been changed if they really had an opportunity to hear the issues at hand. We, of all people, should understand that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere! I hope next time around I can go hold signs with my LBGT friends not in weho where, as Vero said, you preach to the choir — but in Inglewood!
